No comment on the authenticity of the story, but I do wish I could find something like this with my detector!
I do think you have overstated the value of this piece. An unimpaired MS-63 might indeed fetch $20,000 but a ground-find 1806 half eagle would have environmental damage that will bring a "details" grade from PCGS. Market value for such a piece will likely be in the $5,000 ballpark.
I also think your dealer overcharged you. My local PCGS-authorized dealer submitted my AU 1803 eagle for grading using the "secure" service tier. Insured value was $12,500 and my total grading cost was $130.

Media coverage? Really?
If you think my scrutiny about the coin and story behind it is bad just wait for the scrutiny from the TV reporter assigned to do the story starts asking questions. "Where, when, how did you find it? Let's go to the site and see where it was dug. Can you reinact it for the viewers? What's it worth?" Refusing to answers those questions, or being evasive, will then damage your "creed" with the reporter doing the story. A video of you just standing in front of a blue screen showing you and your coin and talking about it ain't gonna happen. Viewers wanna see you in action with dirty hands "where it all happened".
If they decide to do the story they will want to shoot about 10 to 15 minutes of video that will get edited down to about 90 to 120 seconds for airing.
Depending on the audience watching the story unfold you then have a whole new set of problems to deal with. Viewers WILL figure out WHERE you dug it (I'm sure that'll make your land owner friend happy!). They WILL figure out who you are and where you live (that can be real bad!).
I appreciate your excitement and enthusiasm in wanting to publicize your metal detecting experience but you need to think things through BEFORE acting on impulse reaction.
Good luck and patiently waiting for the grade to come back.

LOL westernsky. It reminds me of the story of the Hill Cumorah in western New York, where Joseph Smith found his golden plates. For years afterward people dug up that hill looking for more golden plates. Digging for treasure on other people's land is a popular pastime.

Quote: All I am saying is, who would potentially knock hundreds of dollars off of a coins value by putting dirt on it just for one stinkin video? I guaranty I could stick it in dirt like in the video, rinse it off, and no one would know the difference. Including the best TPGs. It wouldn't knock a penny off the value. Sorry, but I'm calling hogwash on the "find" stories also. I think the coins are real, but the stories are fake.

thq , funny you mention Hill Cumorah - I have permission to metal detect Joseph Smith's house NY & Josiah Stowell's and I did & I actually gave the current property owners (Mormons) a scabbard tip circa 1810 that I found on the Stowell property & some period buttons, they were extremely grateful & thought it is possible that Joseph Smith may have touched it. And just an FYI- I could never afford to buy an 1806 $5 gold coin to do a video with & you'll see when back from PCGS that it'll make number whatever (if there are 80 out there, it'll now be # 81, I don't know the numbers, just saying).

I do not believe for one minute that the owners of Joseph Smith's house would give you, or any other metal detecting digging nut, access to anything as sacred to the LDS faith as his residences would be considered.
What little "creed" you had left with me is now out the window and no matter what you say about the coin's origins they are complete and total hogwash as far as I'm concerned.
You and your metal detector sponsor are full of it. Your coin may be real but the story behind it isn't. Sorry, but that's the way I see it.

They are only sponsoring me after I found it. I won't argue or anything anymore. Does anyone really think I would stay on here (this post) after getting all the negativity from some people and disbelievers if it weren't for the fact that I'm going to prove them wrong next week when I get my coin back from PCGS . Do you honestly think any company would somehow find one these rare coins and hire me to find it, that doesn't even make any sense. Haters will hate and the jealous people will always be jealous. So I'll be posting as many photos of my coin from PCGS as you want to see. Good luck to all the MD'ers & HH .

No one is really arguing the coin isn't real any more.

westernsky , Whatever you think, you think- Josiah Stowell's house in near where I live , it has been restored & renovated to be just like in the early 1800's . The previous owner of the house prior to the mormon owners of recent times was born in that house and owns all the property around it. I will not provide you with the names of the Mormon current owners, but if you happen to know any, you can ask them if this is true and they will verify it. Joseph Smiths house on the river near Nineveh NY has been back filled with new topsoil over the past 25 years and I haven't found anything there (but the original well is still there). Here is a photo of the scabbard I found it last year. And yes the mormons are very nice & grateful. Here is something not many people know except the mormons, myself and the current owner of the property- Josiah Stowell & his father had a saw mill on the property that Joseph Smith worked at- research it. I actually have photos of me back there. Why all the doubting, I just don't understand.

Are you related to Joseph Smith? He was a treasure hunter too, and nobody believed him. Maybe it runs in the family.

Now back to THE COIN!
When/if it gets slabbed you'll need to decide what you want to do with it. You have two options ... keep it or sell it.
Keeping it there is no further discussion needed. Selling it you have several options. You need to start thinking about local shops or auctions. A lot of what you'll get depends on how it slabs.
