Can someone help me out with this Flying Eagle cent. I see a 6 but I don't think the rest makes sense.

Interesting. I can see why there can be some uncertainty. I say 1858 based on the shape of the O in OF.

The top parts of the loop (left and right) of the last digit in the date are of different thicknesses, the left side being thicker.

That does look like an 1856 but I believe it is an 1858. It appears to be the small letter variety which is only found only 1858. Additionally, as stated by TypeCoin, the inside of the O of OF appears to be oval rather than squared. Another strong possibility is that this is an altered date. Many of the 1856 altered dates were made from the 1858 SL variety
Rest in Peace

A 56 would just be too good to be true. I agree that it's an altered 58.

Here is an edited pic of the OP's photo (messed with the exposure and zoomed in on the date)

Definitely not an 1856. Should have large letters and the o in of is not the style used in 1856.

Thanks to all who weighed in on this. Should I get it looked at by an authority and destroyed?.....if it is fake then It shouldn't get a chance to re-enter the collecting ecosystem.

Its not "fake" so much as altered. Put it in a 2x2 labeled as a 1856 and put "Altered date- 1858", or even just put it in as an 1858. Not illegal to own, in fact I believe you could get in worse trouble melting this coin than selling it as a 1856!

No. You would DEFINITELY get into more trouble passing it off as something it is not.

NiNGCumpoop- I am completing a FE & IHC set and it would be nice to have an altered date as part of my collection, even one that is in rough shape. If you are interested in selling, PM me and maybe we can work something out.
