Furthermore ... make it a coin that won't cost an arm and leg to buy ... a commemorative, NOT an investment, that po' folks like me can afford. Say 50¢ or a dollar. And mint 'em in the millions from all three mints, too.

Well.... They could do what they did with this years Commemoratives.... They had a Gold Proof Coin Then offered a Silver Proof Dollar Then offered a Clad Half Each one depicting a different Eagle design This idea would allow for a pricey coin with low mintage (Gold proof) And it would allow a medium range ($40.00 range) Silver Proof Dollar to be purchased. And it would allow the much cheaper Half that "po' folk" and children could easily afford. Bet we all could agree on that ! And the three different designs could represent some marches or him giving the "I have a dream" speech.......maybe similar to the idea of the new Lincoln Cent coming out next year with different depictions of Lincoln throughout the year.

I wish commemoratives were used for their intended purpose and commemorate incredibly important events at the 100, 200, etc. year mark. Most of the modern issues are way tacky and I won't collect any modern commemoratives.

What are your "ideas for future commemoratives".....specifically ? What events would you like to see done ?

I'd like to see a bi-metal Martin Lther King Jr. Comm. the 50th anniversary of his I have a dream speech in 1963 or his death in 1968. His bust on the OBV. and the Great Lawn on the REV. Or better yet, after 100 years of the LMC, do away with it. But change the design for the next 10 years to different African Americans that helped shape the United States.

Seems a fitting tribute to the "unity" he professed. I would much rather see the 50th anniversary of the "I have a dream" speech honoured in 2013, as opposed to one that marked his death. IMHO, marking his death has negative connotations, one being that many backward thinking people feel that MLK is only given attention today because he was killed, and not for what he actually did while he was alive.

If anything, I would prefer a commemorative of MLK's birth, not death and not a speech he made. If we include speeches as a issue warranting a commemorative, than one will have to have one for Lincoln's Gettysburg Address as well as one for many of JFK's speeches. I think commemoratives are being issued in cases that should be commemorated via a medal or token.

I stated on the previous page "For those that like round numbers, next year he would have been 80 years old. They should surely have one in 2029 if the were going to have one at all." However, if it were decided that his coin should be issued sooner than the 100 year mark in 2029, and the choices were between a 2013 speech commemorative and a 2018 "death" one, I would prefer the speech.

I want to see a coin depicting him while I'm still young enough to enjoy it.......I may not see 2029 !....... Or really, at least to have those who marched WITH HIM, still be living and get to see this coin minted and have as a treasure to pass down to their children and grandchildren and great-grandchildren......and have it evoke "living memories" for those to share with everyone. Much like our World War One Vets (almost all dead) and our World War Two Vets (in their late seventies and early eighties and dying quickly).....people who marched "WITH HIM" are still living in good numbers.....and it can honor them as well Martins memory. So to speak......for "Those who were actually there"..........

I think that a coin design commemorating Martin Luther King Jr. would be a great idea. I know that they are coming out with a coin commemorating the blind pretty soon. I have no plans to buy it though.

Considering the overpopulation of non-circulating dollar coins now, I'd think that a clad 50-cent MLK commemorative would be appropriate if minted in sufficient quantity that everyone could have easy access to them. I'd suggest a slightly-larger size than the current dollar coins, however.
Just out of curiosity, Kinte, whom would you suggest to follow Dr. King? Maybe a group in approximate chronological order, starting with notable African-Americans from pre-Revolutionary times?

... I couldn't agree more with this line of thinking ! And am awaiting more thoughts on this..... African Americans shaped our history as much as any other "race" did. Even in the "Old West" with African American Mountain Men, Buffalo Soldiers, (Nicodemus, Kansas has an interesting history!), Slavery, inventors, scholars, participating in EVERY war we've ever fought.......so many different things to be "commemorated"!
