There's no way I could leave them in the roll! Should be fun.

If these are what the wrapper says they are, they can only go up in value. Keep them for a few years.

ya, cracking it and seperating the coins will protect them, plus I am pretty sure this is not an original roll.

A few things to consider... Did you buy this roll on the market from an unknown seller or was it found stashed away by someone who you personally know -- the outcome of the mystery depending on which source might be quite different. But if it were mine I'd draw out the mystery a little longer just for curiosity sake by first contacting Simcoe Office Products who possibly were makers of this paper coin wrapper and ask if it's possible to determine what decade they might have been sold. The website indicates only 18 years but the wrapper certainly looks older than that. http://www.simcoeofficeproducts.com/aboutus.htmlUltimately I suppose the roll would have to be opened but if they are all 1943 mint cents you migh want to have the best that might be MS-65 or higher immediately graded.

It is possible that the coins are all Unc. This roll is in a wrapper from later than what was available in 1943. Just open as right now you are not sure what it contains. Based on years of experience prepare to be disappointed.

This was not a purchase from an unknown seller, but was stashed away by my grandfather. Where he got it, I do not know.... However, regarding the age, my grandfather passed away in 1963 and the collection was put into storage, so I know that the roll must be at least that old.

Well given you know the source of the roll, my advise if you choose to open it is proceed with great caution. While I'm not an expert, my experience in opening an old mint roll of pennies from the '60s to quickly sneak a peak wearing cotton gloves, carefully using tweezers, etc -- they all literally glowed luminous red at the onset -- then replaced them into a sealed plastic tube. However much to my horror within only a couple of weeks I noticed the rims were already turning splotches of brown, only exposed to the air at 5 minutes at the most. Thus my theory is that old copper coins that have never seen the light of day suck up oxygen/air impurities like a sponge, and the less they are exposed the better.
If you have a trusted dealer in your area, they might have a better process?
Regardless, it will be very interesting to learn of your findings. It's like an unopened gift of at least 50 years or greater from one of your ancestors......that's very special, a situation many of us wish we were faced with!

If you were lucky enough to get a MS-65 the average price/value sold on ebay was $152 per on sales of 11 coins. http://www.coinsandcanada.com/coins...&Send=SearchLots of die cracks, clashes, errors and varieties to look for in that roll. It would be nice to have them ready to send off for grading. Crack it open and put up some pictures, hope they are all lustrous red.

Reference to this thread by Houndog Bill regarding longterm storage of copper pennies might also be helpful, in gathering your supplies in advance. https://goccf.com/t/245156Misspelled name - Hounddog Bill

What a find! I'd definitely open it up, but be cautiously optimistic about it. Hopefully the roll was labelled correctly and that it has been stored in an appropriate environment over the years. If you do open it up, I (and likely many others) would really like to see pics of what you find! Good Luck!
