LCS was selling at $13.5/$1. They had just gotten a batch of junk in (they said it was an inheritance).

If a person was saving silver coins as insurance what is the best way to buy junk silver? I see on ebay that silver quarters, dimes etc are being sold for about $250 a lB. Thing is these coins are 90% silver so you are not getting one pound of silver for $250. I am thinking of the silver as insurance for the possible day when currency gets so inflated you could buy a loaf of bread for silver quarter or pay $10 in paper money. Why else stack silver? I am not an investor in gold or silver for long or short term. Just as insurance for economic meltdown.

Got a few dollars face at 14.5x today. Dealer said that there were people coming in all of yesterday looking for silver due to the Brexit vote in the U.K.

Joe, thanks for posting this. its interesting to see the impact of Brexit on main street.
I thought about stoping by our shop on Friday, but it's been going down hill for about a year. Sad.

When silver was at $21.00/ ounce last week, I was able to pick up $3.00 face in Franklin half dollars for a 16x face "Buy It Now" on ebay. At the time, this constituted a very reasonable premium of $1.12/ ounce over spot. While this premium has obviously increased a bit with the overall decline in the price of silver, it is still more competitive than anything else I can find (locally or online).

Went to another coin shop today. They wanted 14.5x which is a nice price but I decided to go with some nice numismatic coins that fit my core collection better than junk silver. They had a nice mixture of halves, quarters, and dimes.
Like the other shop they said that they have been very busy in the past few weeks. Slightly more sellers than buyers according to the dealer.

At gun show yesterday, a lot of coin dealers, saw 18x face. Bought Walking Liberty halves for 16x face. Best deal there and while not as much silver as a 1964 jfk, I I think a good deal at $8each.

I was visiting an antique mall the other day, and there were a number of coin dealers' booths present. For the coins that would have been classified as junk silver in an actual coin store (everything was marketed, in some fashion, as collector material), the lowest price I saw was 16x face for a Standing Liberty quarter. For half dollars, the best price was 24x face; for dimes, it was 20-22x face. The absolute highest price there was $150 for a sandwich bag of 10 Franklin half dollars, which works out to 30x face! In the same booth, there were also many common silver dollars for $45 each (including the 1922-P and 1923-P Peace dollars), as well as a Silver Eagle for $45. All of the above prices are before sales tax, so the total cost per coin would have come out to another multiple or two of face. At the time, the price of silver was bouncing around $19.50-$19.60 an ounce.

Paid $8 apiece for Kennedy halves in great shape today. I only bought 7 since that was the number I needed to finish out a roll.

My LCS yesterday wanted $1.80 for dimes and $8 a piece for quarters. Won't see my truck there again.

New management. Been awhile since I've been in there. The older gentleman I knew is no longer there.

That's actually the same thing that happened to my own local coin store. The previous owner charged very reasonable prices for junk silver, so I was in there several times a week to purchase it. One day I walked in as usual, and without warning, there was an entirely different owner unpacking. My experience with his pricing was shared too. Unlike the previous owner, he attaches all kinds of conditions and stipulations to it (you can entertain yourself with my report of these earlier in the thread). Essentially, you can't just walk in there and look through a bin of same-price junk silver like you used to be able to. The first time I was there, I had a terrible experience with a 50% premium on junk silver Mercury dimes. I went there once more a few months later to give him a second chance, and it was just as bad.
