Checked $100 this morning, no silver, buffalos, or foreign. I had 11 from the 50's, 7 from the 40's, and 2 1938s

Well, I got another $60 this afternoon and went thru them. I found 8 from the 50s and I finally found a buffalo while roll hunting...a 1936s in VG to Fine condition.

O-G, I actually already have nic-a-date; the two dateless buffalos that I found are 1916 and 1919
Note to all;
My next update might be a few days; a nasty virus infected my main computer (laptop) and I had to do a total restore; lost everything. will take some time to try to restore a lot of my stuff (probably should have listened to friends that recommended that I use that online service called Carbonite that backs up all of your files, but, as they say, "hindsight is 20/20") should be back to normal in a couple of days...

Sorry to hear about that virus on your laptop CND. Hope you get it back up and running allright. We'll try to keep the thread 'rolling' for you while you're gettin in worked out . GFR3, Thanks for the congrats on the errors I found. Still don't know what I really have yet. I've got to make a point of getting this 'posting photos' thing figured out. I know once I've got it down it'll be great. I'll get to share images of my finds with you all. And I'm sure I'd get some valuable feedback from you fine folks. Guess I've been a bit pre-occupied searching some rolls and haven't posted my results from yesterday yet. I picked up 64 customer wrapped rolls and 4 fed wrapped ones from two different banks. Ended up with 18 pre-'59's. Did find one silver! It's a '43S. Pretty cool . My first S mint in the silvers too! The oldest one for the day was a 1940. Still looking for that buffalo.... I've got a little theory and I'm wondering about some of your thoughts on it. Do you think you would be more likely to find a buffalo in fed wrapped rolls VS customer wrapped? In contrast, do you think you'd be just as likely to find a silver in one group as the other? I'm guessing this because I figure the buffalos are just more obvious and folks would be more prone to say "hey that's neat" and pull them out. Whereas with the silvers, not as many people are aware of them and might be more likely to overlook them. And with the armored cars services I'm guessing that they're using coin counting machines. Is this right? Make sense? Please let me know your take on it. I also have a newbie question for you guys. Would somebody mind telling me about this nic-a-date stuff? Sounds like something I will eventually be using myself. I've got another box of nickels as well as a box of cents I'm working my way through. Half done with the nickels and have done just a few rolls of the cents. Nothing too exciting yet but at least it's not another full box of BU coins . Although, that did turn out much better than I had expected. So, from here on out, I'll be happy as long as I've got a box of coins in front of me . I think I've finally figured out which branch of my bank has the fed rolls the most consistantly. They where very helpful in getting my coins for me too. I'll be back tommorrow to share my most recent finds.

nic a date is ferric acid, when coins are struck the date is compressed more than the metal around it, so if nic a date is applied it eats away some of the metal around where the date would normally be and magically the date reappears, unless you have a key or a major variety it doesn't increase the value of your dateless buffalo by much, but at least you can tell what dates you've found

Yea, I hear Nic-a-date works wonders. I'm gonna have to pick some up one of these days... I think my collection of dateless Bufs now stands in the double digits and they drive me nuts..just lying on my desk looking up at me as I type away...wanting to tell their stories nut just can't help it....creppy really....
Anyway, I think you're probably right Numi in that Buffalos probably don't show up very often in customer rolls. They stand out to much you know? I suppose its much more likely that they get dumped in a coinstar or something after sitting in someones old pickle jar for a few years (decades, scores, whatever) Silvers might sneak through though. Like you said, they look just like any other Nickel so unless you know what you're looking for they'll just get passed along. I found one once maybe 10 years ago in change from somewhere. I had no idea it was silver, but was interested enough in coins to realize that the "P" shouldn't be there. Good thing I kept it...its the only 42P I got!
As for my searches, I got $300 in Nickels lying in one pick pile on the floor next to my bed waiting to be returned. Wish I had a pic of that to share! After the disapointment of the Pocono trip I returned home and picked up a box at three different banks only to dump them on the floor and dive in head first. Had some pretty decent finds--I'm down to 10 Jeffs to go! A quick overview:
16 Boxes 13 Buffalos (6 dates, 7 nodates) 20 Silvers 4 51S (semi-key?) 1 55 0 Key or other Semi-Key maybe 30 Candian Random amount of Swiss, Berumuda, Bahama, Jamica, Colombia, England, and one other I can't recall
I have been keeping tally of all the pre-60s I've found though I'm not going to post them right now, maybe when I hit the 20 Box mark like CND did. I've slso managed to put together a roll of 60D, 61D, and 68D. I'm working on 60 and 61 right now as well. I plan on saving one or two dates from the sixties at a time until I get 40 nice pieces then moving on to the next date. That way I can build a roll set, won't take a big hit in the wallet as I only find a couple per box, and it creates I nice side project to work on while I hunt down those last ten little buggers!
Until next time, --Gary

GFR3 Hi, I posted on hoarding a ways back and just was breezing through the posts with nickels and noticed you were just here. Are you making your set from seaching through circulation only? If so, that is a cool quest. I just want to mention, my hat is off to you if you ever find a 39D in poscket change or in a roll search. I have never found a 39D except at a coin show, shop or flea market. Come to think of it, I never found a 38D or 39S or 50D in the wild either.

Hi All! I actually have a 100 roll update; even though my computer is still starved for knowledge I at least have this forum going on it! I'll probably post the numbers tomorrow; getting late!
I've been reading all of the posts since my last post. 13 Buffs in 16 boxes? Sweet! Even though there are a lot of dateless, it's a great feeling to see one of those in a roll. And, I agree with you about the Buffs in bank rolls over customer rolls; the armored company is throwing the contents of all of the surplus rolls from their member banks into the counter/wrapper to make up their boxes. So, if there is a customer roll that is loaded thrown into the counter, it would get distributed among multiple rolls, and probably multiple boxes. But, if you do get Buffs in customer rolls, you would probably be more likely to get a bunch in a single roll or maybe two rolls. I guess either method has rewards! And 4 51s? I haven't found one yet! Congrats on that find.
Have to rave about the box of halves I opened today on another forum thread; it is a box I won't soon forget. 2 Franklins, 3 Walkers, and a BARBER!! It's been a good day! Later!

I think that box was created by the Divine Himself! The banks are open late tomorrow so I should have the time to dump all these coins and grab another box or two. In the meantime, I've been completely revamping my collection storage. I used to keep all my Jeffs/Buffs in the standard Whitman Folders as they are all circulated and I figured its cheap, easy, and takes up virtually no room on a shelf. But thats all changing! I'm putting all my Nickels in 2x2's and sticking them in BCW storage pages and into a binder. Its just like having a binder full fo Baseball cards. I swtiched all my Canadians into them late last night (thanks to those who helped supply the early dates btw) but I ran out of Nickel 2x2s I plan on ordering some more (maybe 1000?). I'm going to create a binder based exclusively for Nickels--everything from shield to the new Jeffs. I'm going to continue my hunt to fill the missing Jeff holes and maybe a few more Buffs. I plan on buying Liberty and Shield nickels in standard F-EF condition and filling every hole in the US Nickel collection. I'll try and get ahold of a camera to get a few pics of the Binder once I get those 2x2s. Its a very nice setup I must say --Gary

Hi Coppernickeldaddy, That is a really neat project. I can determine that you have found a fair number of 39 40 42D 43P and other war nicks and 46D 49D 54S 55D I would take a closer look at these, the 39's can be found with both straight steps and wavy steps as can the 40's There may be a 39 doubled reverse in your stack with it being most obvious in the last few letters of MONTICELLO You may have a 42D over Horizontal D mintmark You might have a double eye 43P You might have a 43P 3 over 2 You might have any number of repunched mintmarks on the War Nickels. You may have S over D or D over S on your 49 54 55 nickels. Some of the nickels you have may be good fakes made by Henning, one being obvious as it is a 1944 nickel without a mintmark over the Monticello bldg. Good luck! I can't believe how elusive the 51S is to find in circulation. tells me if you find circs in dealers grab boxes that they should be bought up if they are cheap enough. Heres a cool site! I just learned that 1990 nickels can be found without designer initials! http://varietynickels.com/pages/jef...te-guide.phpKeep on lookin! I enjoy your observations and posts on this.

Theres GFR3 again ... You must be doing pretty much the same thing. Finding a set out in the wild. You guys are gonna get me looking through my longtime stored nicks I put away when I did this. I have maybe 20 or so rolls of some of those better pre 60 dates and unusually well struck full steppers from the series.

Wheezy
yea, I guess the ultimate goal would be to complete a set just from circulation. Though I've had some success with the 51S's (interestingly, all 4 have been found in the last 5 or 6 boxes) I've yet to find any of the "big 5"--38/d, 38s,39d,39s,50d. I have a beautiful 50D that I picked up from a shop a while back for $10 I think? I would love to find one though I think nearly all of the 50d have been picked out of circualtion for some time now.
