Such fun, it is refreshing to see some good old fashion coin collecting. I am glad that the Jefferson nickel is being looked over more closely. It always was my favorite coin. When money is tight, there is always the circulating coin to keep things going.

Hi Wheezy!
Pinned to the wall in front of my desk where I sit and go through the rolls is a list that contains pretty much all that you mentioned that I should be looking for. The only thing I have to admit ignorance about are the Henning coins. I've heard about these mentioned in passing but know very little about them. Are they counterfeits? If so, are they legal to own, or if I announce that I have one will the Secret Service be knocking at my door? How do I know if I have one? Any info would be appreciated!
I have found what I am 99% sure is a 55 d/s; when I get more proficient with my new camera I will attempt to post close-up photos. I actually have a stack of 15-20 coins with questions that I want to see if anyone can help me with once I can get good photos online.
I'll be honest with everybody reading here; when I am through with 25,000 rolls, I expect that I will still need either the 39d or 50d (maybe both) but I hope to get the rest!
Working on two boxes as we speak; not too tired tonight so I might actually be able to post the results in a few hours. If not, sometime tomorrow. Getting close to the 3000 roll update!!

I appreciate you guys talking some more about the key dates to look out for. Makes me even more happy that I found a '38D very early on in searching (same day I found my 1897 Indian cent btw) .

Just want to share an update on some of my recent finds. I picked up my second sealed box of nickels as well as a box of pennies on Tuesday. Nothing of major significance unfortunately.
19- Pre-59
Most significant find for me was my first 1939.

It was interesting that silvers where notably absent. Found stuff on each end of them. A couple 41's and some 46's but nothing in between. Rats!

I picked up my third box yesterday from yet another branch. Got my wife involved on this box. She has no interest but seemed happy to help me out in a neutral kind of way. Trying to get her involved to see if I can rouse a little interest there. It would sure be nice to have my partner share my excitement on some good finds. At least she did find a 1939. I tried to make as big a deal out of it without seeming too hokey. I told her it was a high fiver. I was really hoping she'd find my first buffalo. That might have done the trick!

Again, nothing too amazing in this box but it was a bit better than the previous one.
21- Pre-59
Same story on silvers with this box too.
Most significant finds:
2- 1939
1- 1938.
Also found: A 1995 20 Pence with 7 sides. I know nothng about this coin. Pretty neat looking though.
I also found a 68D, 59D, and a 49D that where all in such outstanding condition I just had to set them aside. Amazing how nice some of these coins can still be after so many years - especially the 49!

I also just have to share this one find I made this afternoon. I picked up 12 rolls of pennies from 3 different stores on my way home from picking up my little girl from school. I'm starting to like stopping in at various small stores to ask for rolls on occasion (this is how I found my '38D AND my 1897 indian head ). First, one roll was full of '82 and pre-82 coins except for one '83. No wheats just a near complete roll of pre-82. Thought that was interesting . But the most interesting coin I found was a 1983 One Ngwee. I have no idea what 'one ngwee' is but it's from Zambia, Africa! I'm sure it's of no special value but that coin is sure a long way from home! Yes, I know, you want photos. I'm working on it. Stay tuned.

Man I'm hooked on this CRHing stuff! HeeHee, can't wait to get some more- LOL.

LOL! Surpisingly many years ago some people actually did turn in some of the counterfiet 1944 nickels. I don't think we have anything to worry about today.
Here is some info, I used to be able to guess the date of a nickel by looking at the reverse.
It's not far fetched, but I did amaze some friends and win a bet or two and you guys know what I am talking about by now.
You have seen so many coming out of rolls that you can spot a good one almost by looking at the rim.
We get used to die characteristics, a 64 is always blah in design for example. An S with little or no detail is usually a 52 53 or 54. You know what I mean? You've seen enough to spot an unusally nice 64D with a few steps haven't you?
Early die state strikes is what I think they are called.

Well to get back to the Hennings fakes, he used the same die for the reverses. So if you have a 44 fake, study the reverse for certain details, then look for similarities in the other dates.
I find that they are just a bit more grayish and look just a bit more fuzzy than a real nickel.

Here is a good article, and I just learned something new. Some of the 1956 nickels were made from Hennings blanks at the mint! Very interesting!

NUMI 63 Nice snag! a 49 D not too shabby and you say it's a nice one too! Bully for you!

Thanks, Wheezy; I actually did a Google search and learned about them. Still can't figure out why somebody would want to counterfeit contemporary-dated nickels! Total waste of time I say!

Another 100 roll update coming up soon; I'm done with them, I just have to tally up what I got.

I think I read somewhere that he actually lost money on the venture....it cost him more to make the conterfeits than they were actually worth! I also read that when he got caught he smiled all the way to the courtroom and said something like "had you guys going there for a while" hahah sounds like a cool guy to me

Hey CND,

Back on page 8 of this thread you mentioned that there are alot of errors in the '05 Buffalo nickels. Just so happens that today I picked up a box and that's exactly what they are! I made note of some of the errors you mentioned to look out for. Do you have any other suggestions on what I should watch for in these?

I haven't opened a single roll yet but I plan to go through some of them tonight. I learned from my last BU box to not dismiss them as worthless. I plan to set a few rolls aside and save them for a few years. I'll pick out some of the finest ones and then search for errors in the rest- Per the suggestions you all gave me here previously.

Thanks for the assistance.

Uhhh just a minute there, do you have a box of uncirculated buffalo Jeffersons? You might consider selling them. If they are bank wrapped rolls, with the shotgun crimp ends, I wouldn't even open them.

wheezydog,

I have a full box of, apparently BU, 2005P with the buffalo on the back. I've opened two rolls to check for errors. Haven't found any yet but this has cofirmed that they do all seem to be 2005p. Yes they are fed wrapped rolls whith the 'shotgun crimped' ends. I'm going to wait until I get a little more feedback from you all before I open anymore.

Might put a couple rolls up on ebay to see how they do. I'm also open to more suggestoins. Anyone else?

Smart move, I am presently boycotting ebay and it is a slow market right now on ebay but that is your perrogative. You could search ebay and see what they fetched recently anyway.
I suspect they are probably worth at least 3 or 4 bucks a roll unopened. People are paying shipping on top of that much too. If you must open them, I would get some 2x2's handy and at least handle them very carefully and look each one over for some with absolutely no bag marks or dings.
Make unc rolls up again with those you don't want to 2x2 and sell them for 3 bucks a roll, as long as you handle them with utmost care, they are still UNCS.
Use a good glass and put the best in 2x2's. There are a lot of people who probably wish they were in your situation with those nickels.
I see there are varieties out there to be had. Speared, humpback, and detached leg varieties.
Plus you might find some clipped or Cuds in the rolls. I would be looking very closely for MS 69 and MS 70 candidates.
Best of luck!

Hey Numi,
Yes, there are a number of errors in the 2005 Buffalo issue. There is an obverse doubled die that is strongest on the word TRUST. Slabbed in high grade they go for low to mid three figures. There is a three-legged variety very similar to the 1937d Buffalo that I can't remember the value. But, considering the error, it is probably of some value. Then there are multiple dies that show a die crack leading toward the ED in UNITED from the rear end of the buffalo that kind of resembles a spear. There are multiple dies, though, so I don't think they go for much. I just got through adding to my Gallery a number of photos; I will post a photo of the spear variety later on. Also, I've heard of dramatic rotated dies on this issue, but I've never seen one sold or found one myself.

Having said all that, I think I would open maybe ten of the rolls, and try to sell the rest on ebay. That was a popular issue, and you could probably get a premium for bank rolls of them.

XoG,

I'm still looking for that 51s; everybody seems to be finding one except for me!! Congratulations!

I've just started a thread about that half dollar box I went through the other day that contained the Barber half with a photo, if anybody cares!

I've been through another 100 rolls; pretty good two boxes this time around, especially for silver nickels! Will post the results later.

This post is basically a test:

If I did this right a photo of the 1993s Proof that I found during the nickel survey should post here.
