It was suggested that I share pics of the dateless Buffalo that I discovered in a roll. Here they are. Please excuse the poor images, I'm still getting used to taking pictures of coins. I'm not worried about the date really, but if anyone has any ideas on what year this was minted, I'd appreciate the feedback.   |

I have found there is actually a market for these coins as they have relatively low mintages compared to modern coins and the S-mints are hard to find in the Eastern part of the country. Your coin is a Denver minted one, so that's a very good thing as pretty much every date prior to 1927 is worth a good little amount. More than likely, it was minted before 1929 - I have pickled over 50 nickels now, and the latest date I have had revealed on a previously dateless one is 1928-D. Before you do anything to it, try and take some more pictures of the date area, at different angles, if possible. The date is actually pretty important when your coin has a mintmark - one of the nickels I pickled turned out to be a 1914-D! Another nickel, which I found a long time ago and pickled last year turned out to be a 1921-S! CRH Nickeloholic. 1,600,000 nickels searched in eight years! Have found FOUR complete Jefferson sets!

Hi Jaunty - I agree with our fellow coin enthusiast (John); your Buffalo is likely older than 1928 as that is also my latest year for a pickled specimen (coins after that generally have a visible date). The pictures are a little grainy so keep at it; we may be able to do better with better photos. Lighting is important; catching a shadow of a worn date sometimes reveals clues. Also, see if you can get a clear shot of the braid.
It would be fun to date this coin for you, being your first Buffalo find. As a last resort, pickling this coin will reveal a date as it isn't too far past being able to see it, especially in hand. Sometimes tilting the coin in hand shows you something you can't quite capture in a photo. But the reverse is also true.

7 more rolls today. A little better than last time. 8x1940s, 5x1950s (all common date/mm). Also got 15 westward journey coins and a 1988S. That makes two proofs in the last two groups. Having fun!

Happy hunting Bump! I probably slowed down your CRH events, but now you'll be looking at 60's nickels with a greater enthusiasm perhaps. So many DDOs/DDRs/RPMs in the 60's (and other dates of course) to find a nice specimen. I get excited when I find a high grade 1962/1962D as there's a decent chance of finding a variety keeper.

I did a box and 65 other assorted rolls yesterday. 4600 coins in all. I found 46 pre-60s including my 7th hardest to find coin overall - the 1945-D, 2 1943-Ps, a dateless Buffalo, a nice BU 1957 coin in a S&S roll - similar looking to the pair of 1954 Philly coins found a couple weeks ago in a half box of S&S rolls, and my first 1958 of the year. There were also 10 2009-Ds! Unlike Thursday, all but 10 of the rolls were MWRs. I am starting to think the 2009 coins didn't circulate much locally as they rarely seem to turn up in CWRs, but much more frequently in the MWRs - something I intend to research further in the coming days.
