I've been busy today, and will be tomorrow, but I'll try to get better/more pics of my buffalo up early next week. Thanks for all of the advice/encouragement!

Jaunty - here's a link to some diagnostic information by one of our fellow enthusiasts. http://goccf.com/t/96532&SearchTerm...ffalo,nickel From what I can see in your photo, it is not a 1913 D Type 1, 1920 D (Type 2), or 1924 D (Type 2). We know it's a Type 2 reverse design and it appears to be a straight ribbon. I read somewhere else here that you can possibly use tissue paper (e.g. perhaps from a recent gift) and a pencil to attempt to lift the date by placing the paper over the shoulder where the date should be and rubbing the pencil over it to see if a date is revealed. Keep in mind that a 1913 D Type 2 nickel is worth $100 in G condition. 1914 D just under that. It's worthy your while to exhaust your investigation before you pickle the nickel. But when all else fails, it may be the only way to learn what you did actually find. |

Thanks, jbuck! Did another 2,000 coins yesterday... found 20 pre-60s including a 1945-P, and a 1959 "Black Beauty" coin. I also found my first proof of the year - 2003-S, and a single 2009-D.  CRH Nickeloholic. 1,600,000 nickels searched in eight years! Have found FOUR complete Jefferson sets!

Thanks for the link Rackster! I agree that it looks like a Type 2 reverse design with a straight ribbon. I tried the rubbing that you suggested a couple of times, varying the amount of pressure but that didn't yield any results. I also looked at it and took pics with varying degrees of light and at different angles. A couple of the pictures are posted below, but I couldn't make out any details. Any other advice?   |

Thanks for the diagnostic link, Rackster; I'll have to check my dateless pile. I went through a box this weekend and found my first Buffalo of 2018: 1935-D. The box also had a 1938-P, 1962 Canadian, and an extremely light aluminum 1 yen coin.    |

I'm glad I could help folks!! Honestly, I wish I found the link earlier myself...I may have spared a couple pickled nickels a dip into the brine!!
Through the pickling process, I've been able to reveal 2 1913D Type 2 CRH finds, 1914-1920 D & S, and 1923S. The thing of it is that there are many semikey/key Buffalo out there in circulation, only the nickels are dateless. I suspect that had I known about the dating methods for those 1920s Buffalo, I'd be a little further along in my circulation set rather than being further along in my Pickled Nickel Set (also circulation finds). But you live and learn; just hoping I might be able to spare a fellow enthusiast a similar fate (which altogether isn't a bad thing if you do have to do the etch). But it sure would be great to find some kind of diagnostic for those early Buffalo so it can be attributed without the pickling process. I'll keep digging about the internet to see what there is to learn about dating dateless nickels.

Went through the box I got yesterday today, and found 20 pre-60s including a very beat up 1943-P, and a 1948-S. I also found 2 2009-Ds, and my first 2009-P of the year. I'm at 19,360 nickels searched a week into 2018.  CRH Nickeloholic. 1,600,000 nickels searched in eight years! Have found FOUR complete Jefferson sets!

I searched for $100 Nickels boxes but I founds 16 Pre-60s and 2 War Nickels. Pre-60s1940 1941 1941D 1941S 1942 1946(2) 1946D 1947 1954 1954D 1957D 1958D(2) 1959D(2) Silvers1943P 1943S HAPPY HUNTING!  |

Nice job Pancake. My box was a little light. Usually get 25-30 pre-60's from a box but not this time. But hey, there's always more out there! Good luck on your next box

Good finds, Pancake and shotgung. In my experience, the boxes can vary a lot... Typically I get 15-25 pre-60s, with an average right around 20, but I've had as few as 10, and as many as 170 (and that was a box which was 6 rolls short of full)!

It looks like 2018 is off to a good start for many of you! Congratulations.
I've been finishing my census for 2017. I did about 80 boxes in 2017 year and my totals are below. They include a dump of 14 rolls that had all 40s and 50s. In 2016 I did 115 boxes, so my searching was down in 2017. Some surprises (or at least surprising to me):
In 2016 I found six 1939-S coins; in 2017 I found none.
In 2016 I found only two 1950-P coins; in 2017 I found five.
Philadelphia coins from the 1950-1959 are not that plentiful.
Certain wartime cents are hard to find; I found no 1942-S cents in 2017 (but three in 2016).
