Sounds about like the group of 50 rolls I just did, minus the two Bahama 5 cents. Wonder why it is you're finding those Bermuda/Bahama nickles and the 1 Francs? I've not seen any where I am yet. Just some Canadians. Although I wouldn't be too surprised to find a wide variety of foreign stuff considering I buy my coins in a college town. ALOT of international students here! Oh yeah , I can see your point about the luster not lasting too long once the coins hit circulation. I'd bet nickels to donuts(something my mom used to say except it was 'dollars to donuts') you're right about the mint easing up on the die pressure to save money. Next thing you know they'll be moving to Mexico with the rest of the large corperations !

Just picked up my first ever, sealed box of nickels! Basic rectangular cardboard box. Imprinted on 4 sides simply with- "$100. NICKELS". With eager anticipation I gently but quickly opened the box. Are you ready for this!? As I opened it up I could see.......Oh boy....Oh.. CRAP! It's a full box of BU 2007P Nickels! Dang, what an absolute dissapointment ! Gotta laugh about it though. I guess that's the chance you take with gettng a sealed box. Anyone want some '07P BU Nickels? They sure are nice and shiny . Anybody? CND or anyone else- What did I do wrong? Are their certain types of boxes to look for that aren't going to be all new coins? Any suggestions? Guess I'll just be watching TV this weekend . Think I'll go back to requesting customer wrapped rolls on Monday......

lol Numi, thats rough man. Nothing like a big let down huh?
I don't think there's a way to be certain your going to avoid a box of new coins--just plain old bad luck. I've searched 13 boxs now and haven't come across a solid date box just yet. I suppose this might start happening in a month or so, when the 08 nickels are being sent out in large amounts.
I'd save a a roll or so (can't hurt right?) and go dump the rest tomorrow morning and pick up another box before the banks close. Its too big of a disapointmint to sit on all weekend!

Don't feel so bad Numi 63, I've been working on my 3rd box of Nickels, and nothing to write home about yet (and I'm a 3rd of the way through). No silver, no Buffalos...Boo hoo for me !! Wish me luck on the last 1/3rd !

Numi, Take heart; that doesn't happen very often. It's happened to me twice (well, actually 1.99 times), one box I got was solid 2007P, and another I got had maybe 1 in every 100 coins NOT a 2007P. Don't give up on the sealed boxes yet!

Maybe look for the best of the 2007, look for full steps and the least amount of bag marks, save them and make rolls to sell on E-bay... just an idea, not sure if it's a good idea or bad though.

Thanks all for the sympathies and suggestions. Guess I just hit it wrong on the first try huh? I'm resiliant though and it'll take more than that to put me on the bench . Just want to mention that I didn't open a single one of these rolls yet. They are all those rolls that are tucked yet open at each end. Guess those are the fed wrapped rolls right? It was obvious that they were all in the same condition and all had the same dudes face showing on one end or the other. There were a few that showed tales on both ends but still obviously all the same. I might take your suggestion GFR3 and hold back just two of them for the future. If I make it to my 60's or beyond that may be long enough for them to have appreciated. Then again that's only 16 years from now. Maybe I'll sell them to a younger person who has more years ahead of them- LOL! I won't be back out to the banks until Monday. I think I'll try a different bank or maybe just ask for 50 loose rolls. The last 50 rolls I got was actually from 3 different banks(20, 20, & 10). I did this mainly to compare the different results from each bank. One of the three did seem to produce a higher ratio of pre- '59 stuff. I'd like to try this again a time or two to see if the results are consistant. Two of the banks are branches of the bank I hold an account at. The third is actually 7 miles away and in another state(only one '54 from those ten, coinstar wrapped, rolls). The one that produced the best results is also the one I found my first silver while roll searching. My very first silver nickel (of the three that I now have) I found just last month when I first started CRHing. I didn't find it in a roll. I actually found that one while I was rolling up all the change I had in some jars in preparation to go buy rolls of halves! I hadn't even learned about the silver nickels until the night before! Talk about ironic! Well, after just glancing back over the successes of you all I think I will hitch up my drawers and go get another box from a different bank on Mon! Wish me well. And I'll see ya here later.

Hi Numi
Save a couple rolls, open the rest and look for major erros (blank planchets, mistrikes, etc) This can be done pretty quickly. First couple rolls you open take a little longer and pick out the very best coins you can find. Put them in flips for future use.
I just bought a Harris Type Album (not as good as the 7070 but will do until I get that one) I'm going to start doing these 1 at a time for Grandkids. If you ever decide to do a Type set like this you will want some Uncirculated coins for simple slots. By saving a few of these you will have them. Just an idea.
Oh, btw, I'm in the same boat as you at the moment. I picked up a box of nickels at the bank Friday.....all 05 Buffys. Second full box I've gotten from a bank.

I'd love to find a box of 05 Buffys! That is the only date that I check every coin during CRHing, as that design was hit with a lot of errors, oth great and small. Die cracks that look like spears in the buffalo, rotated dies, a doubled die obverse, the three-legged error, interesting filled dies, lots of fun!!

Hi of-grandpa,
I haven't done so yet but I think I'll take your suggestion and start checking these rolls for errors and such. I hadn't even considered doing so but the thought of finding a blank planchet or similar major errors would be pretty cool huh!?
Does anyone know of any specific errors that have already been found in this year and mint? Suggestions for anything else I should focus my eyes on....?
Also, since I'm brand new to keeping my coins with this level of preservation in mind, does anyone have any home-brewed methods for keeping them safe and unblemished until I do get some albums or other 'keepers'?
CND- with your mention of the number of errors that might be present on the 'new' buffalos, I guess I'd better start paying closer attention to those too! I've been seeing ALOT of those but have only been watching for the S proofs. What all should I look for?
I know the nickels hold a place of their own but do any of you know of a similar thread to this one that is or has been searching dimes or quarters in a similar way?
Thanks to all.

Just went through my first 4 rolls of those '07P nicks. I was pretty slow and meticulous my first roll but was able to pick up the pace a bit once I got more familiar with them. I just sat aside any that looked real good and then went back over them to pick out the best five from each roll. I was pleased to see that every so often there were some that had a very high luster - an almost proof-like look. Of those, I had to reject a couple due to some pretty bad dings and the like. I now have a new appreciation for the newer BU stuff. Kind of makes me a bit dissapointed that I didn't hang onto that roll of 1998P BU roll of Kennedy halves I had come accross last month. I took them back to the bank in hopes of finding some more silver . Looks like I've hit a forum milestone! This will be my 51st post.

Congrats on the 50 posts Numi! Go check out the Buy/Sell/Trade forums and look for some deals!
Has anyone come across a bank that won't sell you coins even if you're a member? I ended up in the poconos last night to spend the weekend with the 'rents and decided to hit up my old bank. I cashed my check and, since the place was empty void me, I asked the teller if she could give me $100 in nickels along with the rest of my check. She give the standard "um..." face at first but went looking to see what she had for me. Her manager came out like a minute later and said that they only give coins to business. I told her a have my own business (more or less true ;) ) and she told me that i'd have to leave!?!? Needless to say, I closed my account and withdrew the $37 still in my childhood account.
Anyone ever experience anything even remotely like this? Ask for nickels then get kicked out of the bank? hahah I swear, the poconos are the bizarro-world Superman is always talking about

GFR3,
Haven't quite had the experience you had yet. But I did get rejected, for the first time, just yesterday from one of my dump banks. When I tried to turn in my $48 in nickels, she asked if I had an account with them. When I replied "no" she said they didn't take coins unless I held an account with them. Then she offered to open an account for me. I politely declined and took my coins to another bank.
The only other teller that ever asked if I had an account with them was when I was buying 20 rolls of nickels from my own bank. This particular teller didn't know me. But once I said I had an account there, it was no problem. That is other than the fact that this teller was obviously 'bothered' by my request.

LOL Gary.....bizarro-bank world I've not had any problems with any bank so far. I know that if I had experienced what you did I would also close my account but only after asking to talk with a VP or higher.....I might even get in contact with a local newpaper with a scoop for them "Local Bank Refuses to Deliver Nickels!!"
