I probably saw threads talking about this topic years back, but what is proper etiquette for ordering half dollar coins from a bank? I was told by the branch manager at one of my banks that I'm welcome to order half dollar coins from them if I want, just give them a week's notice in person or over the phone.
I'm pretty sure the other guy ordering half dollars from my branch isn't following those guidelines, because I was offered $90 in machine wrapped half dollars today and was told that they were part of a $500 order that the customer didn't take in full. Apparently that guy orders half dollars from time to time, looks through them for "interesting coins" and then dumps his rejects in the coin counter at that branch. I know very well that THAT move is a big no no. Same reason I'd never bring small head bills tellers saved for me back to the same branch because I "didn't need them in the end"- do people understand the phrase "don't bite the hand that feeds you?"
Anywho, I'm glad I went through that $90 because I found two silvers- a 1964-D and 1966! Now I just have to figure out what to do with the rest of the coins, was planning on unloading them at the grocery store since their self checkout machines accept half dollars!

So, did you enjoy the experience and are you satisfied with your return? Old-timers like me, who searched thousands of rolls in the '50s and '60s with many savers (imagine searching hundreds of bags of solid wheat cents), are always curious about today's worthy finds, which seem predictably few given the effort involved.

The best thing to do if you're wanting to order coins is to build a rapport with the tellers and/or managers of the bank(s) you do business with. If you're good to them, they usually will bend over backwards for you.
In terms of dumping the coins, you're lucky to have a grocery store which accepts halves - none in my area do. If having to dump coins it's ALWAYS try to find a dump bank which is different from your main buy bank - make it a completely different financial institution if possible.

You can use them for purchases. There is a topic category on the blog for tracking and encouraging the use of half dollars (dollar coins a $2 bills). By doing so, they become less of a rarity in commerce and banking.
Keep Half Dollars circulating!

I held up to six different accounts for CRH. For separate pickup and dumps, in which I used a credit Union with a free counting machine, and another that accepted $500 bags of loose coin over the counter. They even supplied the bags.
When I listen to LED ZEPPELIN...so do my neighbors...

The number one rule of Coin Roll Hunting Etiquette.............never take coins back to the banks you get them from.
Also, banks that give you coins without an account.....................bring them a dozen donuts every now and then. They will remember you!!

Many banks will not give you coins if you don't have an account. Go back to those banks in 6 months. Managers and tellers are constantly turning-over. You might very well get lucky the second, especially with halves and dollars. Most banks I hit, want to get rid of halves and dollars. Just remember, don't bring them back to those banks.
Also, if you establish a relationship or rapport with any tellers; give them your name and number and ask them to call you when coins come in they want to get rid of. You might be surprised at the phone calls you will get.
Whenever you hit banks, always go with cash in your pocket.

Tellers at all my bank branches are absolutely wonderful to me!! I always rewrap my coins, and, return full boxes (OK, sometimes I'm a roll short  ) They appreciate getting rolled coins back. In return, they know that I like to get sealed boxes, so they almost always oblige. If it's not a sealed box, I take it anyway. I can just go exchange it at another branch. I also NEVER fuss about anything to them! Sometimes, the person who can get into the vault is on lunch. I don't complain. I just say "No problem, I'll get some next time" Oh, and I learned last time at the bank - ask if anyone brought in anything unusual. Fellow at next teller was getting dollar coins to give to his grandkids. My teller asked him if he wanted the 9 "Large Dollars" someone had brought in earlier. Of course he said YES. I commented that I'd've jumped on that, too (I didn't even know what she meant by large dollars). He was gracious and let me have four of them. I got two 1974 and two 1978-D Ike dollars  Edited by snailking1
