I managed to find some information about a medal that I bought on ebay in a book called Mu#776;nz- u. Medaillen-Kabinet des Freiherrn by Wilhelm Knigge. Here is the short blurb from the book about the medal: I know that "Reim. 3859" refers to the book Mu#776;nzen- und medaillen-cabinet des justizraths Abth. 2 by Johann Friedrich Christian Reimmann, but I am unable to decipher what "Rethm. LIV 9." refers to. Does anyone know of a reference book about German medals written by an author called "Rethm."?

If anyone could help you - it's Ron Guth at http://www.germancoins.com/ I'd bet he might know something more about it, It appears to be an abbreviation, possibly for Rethmann? I can't find any references by anyone with that name though. George Kolbe (the book dealer) also may be of some help, as he deals in lots of Germanic numismatic literature. And one more long shot is John Kraljevich of http://www.jkamericana.com though he deals in Americana, he knows as much as anyone in the medallion field of study and is an esteemed researcher. I found the book on Google Books "Medaillen-Kabinet des Freiherrn" by Wilhelm Knigge A search of "Rethm." in that Google Book copy, reveals 51 instances, all with roman numerals afterwards, so it is most likely a cataloger referencing volumes of his auction catalogs is my best guess. Unfortunately I don't see any useful information beyond that, no appendix listing or citing the references, it is an old book with lots of handwritten notes (all in script German) and not easily discernible, nor is the handwriting searchable.

After weeks of inquiry, I finally managed to solve the mystery. For those interested, the reference booked referred to by "Rethm. LIV 9." is Braunschweig-Luneburgische Chronica by Philipp Julius Rehtmeyer.

Nice detective work. How'd you finally track down that info?

I contacted Ron Guth like westcoin suggested but he was unable to find any information. He suggested that I contact an auction house in German to see if someone there would know. I then contacted Kunker GmbH and after a few weeks they replied back with the answer.
