I was tempted to bid on this since I am starting to collect the 12 caesars in silver. the Vitelius and Julius Caesar seem to have the most value.http://www.ebay.com/itm/22197174415...RK:MEBIDX:IT

I think it is acceptable , but at the high side ; Caesar and Vitellius very good , also Domitianus , but his coins are much cheaper ,quality of Augustus,Tiberius and Vespasianus bad , Titus only the reverse nice and Nero good . IMO it better to buy the coins separately , you will have a better quality for the same price . The big problem in the 12 Caesars are Caligula and Claudius , there are very, very expensive in a fine quality , if you can find them.albert

IMO the price is too high based on the condition of the coins. You would be paying the extra money for the slabs. Most of these coins are graded VG and could be gotten cheaper in a raw state.

(I just finished a 12 Caesars set in silver and I think you can do better. As said above the JC and Vitellius are nice but you can get better examples of the others. Just think of the missing ones, Galba Otho Claudius and Gaius (Caligula). As also mentioned above the last 2 will cost you if you can find them. I can tell you from personal experience that these 2 will be very tough especially on a budget. When these 2 appear there is a lot of competition for them as these are the 2 that everyone needs for their set. If you are in the market for them you need to jump on them as soon as you see them. This also means you need to be prepared to spend. You will be very lucky to find a Claudius under 1000 US. As for Gaius nice decent examples can start at 2500.00 and go far north of that.

The other option to to collect as many as possible in silver and do the rest in bronze. Asses of Caligula and Claudius are very plentiful and can be had for not very much money. It took me six months of actively pursuing these coins to complete the set. I wish you luck with building your set. It is a worthwhile and enjoyable pursuit but you need to be persistent.

Also, I have only bought 1 ancient coin in a slab. I took a hammer to the slab and freed the coin from its plastic tomb. Slabs are an excuse for sellers to change more for coins. They also mean you cannot hold your coins. There is nothing quite like holding a 2000 year old coin.

As mentioned above
A Claudius and Gaius can set you back over 3,000 US !

For a big time cheapskate like myself I cant even begin to imagine doing it !

Let me count the possibilities

VF+ Augustus As $350
VF+ Tiberius As $350
VF+ Caligula As $350
VF+ Claudius As $200
VF+ Nero As $350
VF+ Galba As $400
VF+ Vitellius As $500
VF+ Vespasian As $200
VF+ Titus As $200
VF+ Domitian As $200

Did I reach $3,000 yet ? Well yes I did .......
But I am also being generous about what I spend on each coin !
With some patience and work looking through seller inventories I think I might still add Nerva,Trajan, Hadrian,Antoninus Pius and Marcus Aurelius too !

Thanks for all replies. doing some research I thought the Vitellius and Julius Caesar would be about 500.00 each in this condition. So basically I would get the lower grade coins for free and sell them to upgrade to better quality ones. In the end I passed on the deal based on the sellers feedback.
