KurtS Pillar of the Community United States 5318 Posts	Posted 01/30/2008 5:11 pm I'm thinking around VF-30, and it appears to my eyes as the "concave" variety which is more common than the "flat" variety. Charlton's 2008 lists the VF-20 at $3 and the EF-40 at $15. Charest lists the VF-30 at $3.25, but I consider his values a little low against sales I've seen. Report this Post to the Staff

KurtS Pillar of the Community United States 5318 Posts	Posted 01/30/2008 9:17 pm Snaz...I'm just going by what I read in my Charest book "Canadian coins and their varieties", where he lists 2 varieties for 1922: one has concavity where the coin field meets the edge, and the other variety has a more flat transition. Numismat Pillar of the Community United States 1666 Posts	Posted 01/30/2008 10:37 pm Vf? Maybe it's the pictures. The coin has full original mint luster and the only sign of wear is on the front beam of the crown and ball. I've seen examples with significant wear on the leaves as well passing as EF-45. A local dealer offered to buy it as a strong AU example, and I highly doubt a dealer would over-grade something they want to buy. I really need to try and take sharper pics. KurtS Pillar of the Community United States 5318 Posts	Posted 01/30/2008 11:07 pm Ok, ok...did I mention that I find Canadian coins a challenge to grade? Grade as you see fit. You know--I actually went to a site to check on grading before I wrote anything. I've posted some reference pics below. The crown band is a key determinant of grade, and since your 5c has a flat spot worn on the band, I graded down. I saw the luster, but Canadian 5c retain that longer than our US Nickels, so I was unsure about XF. I guess Canadian nickels just look a lot better in mid-grades than a lot of other coin types. At least now I know not too consult with local "experts" about Canadian coins =) Report this Post to the Staff
