Seems the year of 2016 might be one of coasting in the eyes of RCM. But next year - 2017 and Canada's 150th birthday - watch for a huge outpouring of NCLT, both individual coins and sets, to celebrate the event. If any of you collected NCLT during the millennium, you'll know what I mean (and one of the reasons I've moved away from getting too excited over "event" releases, the following year it's like "whatever")

Hopefully there will be some strong designs, similar to the 1967 designs. They need to put out some well thought out appealing designs that are meaningful. I do like the fact our coins have a minimum of text on them. I am putting money away in preparation for some worthy coins. The one thing I dislike on the American coins is the heavy use of text. I feel too much text detracts from coin designs, I

A few months ago RCM put up various options of designs for the 2017 circulation coinage to public vote, did you notice it? They were nothing like the simplicity of 1967 and the majority were so overly detailed that what they intended to portray was lost in the complexity of design. But possibly RCM will create a 5oz NCLT, good chance of colouring....at least if it's somewhat larger people wouldn't need a magnifying glass! Whatever is chosen though, I'm mostly looking forward to the circulation coin. It will generate a bit of excitement and prompts people to take a second look, something different, something to notice.

Yeah I missed the whole thing and there's no way to see the candidates. They had Alex Coleville design the 1967 coins, a world renown artist. This time it was an open contest, maybe a good design or two. I'm not holding my breath. Hopefully the none circulation coins will have a few stunners.

Here's a link to the topic: https://goccf.com/t/239264I'd be very surprised if 2017 NCLT deviates entirely from the circulated designs as it would require a duplicate group of artists.

So almost guaranteed, that we well have "alternative" circulation coins, as real circulation and NCLTs as well in the singles and various sets and subscriptions editions.

The two sets above (quarters) were intended to get young collectors interested in the hobby. I'd love to see the 1967 Alex Coleville designs re-used for 2017, including the 50 cent piece.

Maybe we should have a 2017 What's Your Bet thread. I think the options will include 1oz silver, and 5oz NCLT, option of gold-plated or painted, all replicas of 2017 circulation coin. The "big coin" series, in preparation, has been gearing up for that, it forms a sequence. It certainly would be fantastic if RCM were to reissue a 1967 set. However I'm not thinking that will happen because it would be unusual to issue a new 2017 design of circulated coinage to commemorate the 150th anniversary of confederation, while minting NCLT that commemorates the 100th anniversary. I think RCM made a huge mistake by not reusing the 1967 theme:-(

I think a lot of the new grannybaitish stuff the RCM has been releasing as of late is really hurting the hobby (e.g. Looney Tunes, Nascar) However, it seems a lot of their classic stuff like commemorative dimes, quarters and loonies that I'm selling are as hot as ever. People like collecting things that look like circulation coinage but are of a different design you can't get in change. I listed things 2 days ago on ebay, didn't look at them and some of them are already at $20, or have 20+ watchers! A lot of my coin auctions have more than 10 watchers so I guess coin collecting isn't dead...yet. :)
