I'm looking to purchase one book to help me get started.

I've been doing research online for a few weeks for various cents & coins, which has helped somewhat.

I am a visual learner & need to read in a book, making notes in the margins, highlighting, etc...in order to retain more the info.

Thanks much for your help & advice.

Be blessed,
Jo

A current or fairly current RedBook would be a great start

I am too slow, John beat me to the punch.

As they said, the Red Book -- for US coins only (you didn't specify country).
Krause for world coins, then something specialized for a particular country.

Yep, a Red Book. About every 20 years I get a new Red Book. Like was said, I don't use the values much, but the rest of the info is great.

Red Book is a great start when I started collecting was a great first book and then followed it with the Cherry Pickers Guide and Strike It Rich with Pocket Change when I decided to go the path of errors and varieties

Another vote for the Red Book. If you're really ambitious you could get the MEGA Red Book!

If world coins are your interest, the Krause Standard Catalog of World Coins are good for a reference.

The Red Book is a good suggestion.

CelticKnot mentioned the Mega Red Book, that would be my choice.

The Mega Red is a expanded version of the Red Book.

FYI - The new Red books come out each year in April.
Pre orders around that time have good discounts.

Reflecting the posts of others, the Red Book is the way to go! It was my first numismatic book as a kid.
