I wish I could get a substandard Marshalls silver dollar for around $25 but don't think that will happen.

Quote: jack jeckel - you suggested unc over proof so I take it you're less pleased with how the '86 Ellis Island is looking (since that is indeed a proof). I would be happy to gift you one of my Proof or UNC Ellis Island halves I have found roll hunting if you are dedicated to the pocket piece cause. Message me with your address.

wow thanks jack jeckel, that is too kind of you. though I do like the ellis island, I think I will look for an inexpensive '87 Constitution, which I tend to favor the design of even more.
But really, I've been debating on whether unc or proof will look better. Do you have an unc ellis island pocket piece in addition to the prood that you posted a pic of earlier? If so, please post pics of the unc for comparison.
Thanks!

I would be tempted to try a proof and unc at the same time lol see how they wear given the same conditions.
What exactly happens to the proof ones that is negative?

Just came across this recently sold 1997 US Botanic Garden unc $1 silver that appears to have been a pocket piece: http://www.ebay.com/itm/13168899362...&_mwBanner=1...not sure how much carry time that represents. I just picked up my 1987 Constitution unc on ebay for a couple bucks over spot. I plan to carry as a pocket piece and I'd love to go for the look of the Kennedy half that 1967Canadapenny posted here: https://goccf.com/t/129321&SearchTe...lation,cameonot sure if I can get the same effect...looks like that half dollar is proof ("S" mintmark), though don't know if it is silver or clad or how it was toned, etc

Bertensgrad, sounds like you and I will be starting our new pocket pieces around the same time. I picked up an unc '87 US Constitution 200th anniversary commem $1 on ebay and expect it any day now. we should post pics here in maybe 3 months or so to see how things are looking. I see you went with an ASE, nice choice. Is it proof or unc? Did you take a look at that 1995 Kennedy that I referenced a few posts back, it definitely has a unique look about it.

Uncirculated in mint shape, definitly wasn't willing twice as much for a proof when it's going straight in my pocket. I hoping to start a few different coins actually maybe next week if everything works out. ASE will come maybe Monday. We see I guess. I always forget a carry a piece in my wallet already. I have it in a Mylar flip however to keep it from wearing too fast. I got it on the first date with my fiancee. I got one for me and one for him. He keeps his in a wallet no flip and in his pants and has a nice cameo like that half. Nerdy place to go on a first date but we were just driving around not wanting it to end. Dropped in and I got us those pennies and we kept them with us since. Also had a lot of coins I didn't remember in there lol. A Mardi Gras token that has been in there for three years lol, two cleaned wheat pennies. A 1887 pennifing and a 1987 Canadian nickel. Ended taking most of it out lol

I was tempted by the 1987 constitution dollar but just didn't like the reverse well enough. I just kept running into the issue where I didn't like one of the designs sides. I'm much more into the designs of the halves in the whole series. It's a lot easier to have a full design on a half without awkward larger blank spaces. I'm still not the biggest fan of the eagle side of the ASE but it will grow on me as a study it. I prefer more life like or stylized. The Walker half is the perfect coin for me followed by $20 St double eagles and mercs.

I like the look of those old British pennies. Funny, I think the reverse of the '87 Constitution is awesome. The other day I requested to change my avatar to that. I don't necessarily agree about the halves; I think the design can fill up the space on a coin no matter how big it is, it all depends on how the artist/sculptor designs it. Any design can go on any size coin, though more detail definitely lends itself to a bigger "canvas". I love the '86 Ellis Island half, and plan to start a pocket piece of that too (maybe proof). I do like the forthcoming National Park half dollar design a lot better than the dollar design. I wish these halves were silver, like the classic series. I don't really care much for the ASE reverse eagle design either. I hope it does grow on you as you'll probably look at it often being a pocket piece.

The halves being clad yet not being silver keeps me away from them. On maybe 80% of the series I prefer the halves when available. It you like cameos you would really like my fiancees.

So sad it's been stuck in the same place in Florida for almost 6 days on the tracking. I'm starting to worry about it, hoping it's just a scanning glitch. It's still within the guidelines for first class mail as long as it breaks for free and gets to me by in the end of the week.

Nice one Bertensgrad! ebay purchase - how much you pay? Yep, got mine today as well: got this together with a 1986 liberty $1 on ebay for $27.80 shipped. This '87 dollar had some tape glue residue on the reverse, probably dissuaded some bidders (that and both coins were loose). Anyone know when they started frosting these UNC commems? This '87 coin definitely has a different surface treatment than some of the more recent UNCs that I have, which look similar to that ASE. going in my pocket maņana. [<-- the maņana banana]
