Quote:I'll stick with the 20 for 20 Batman v Superman coin, which is already being shown on the RCM web site as part of the 2016 $20 for $20 Collection. Item NO. 153491. Pretty much my game plan. Seen the coins, none (even the 20/20) of them are impressive IMO. Quote:I really do not like the direction the Mint is taking. Take the word 'Canada' off these coins and they scream Perth Mint. I would agree to that sentiment for these coins, but I'd say (hope) this is an exception more than a new trend. I honestly hope this entire movie-based coin theme tanks, the mint recognizes the failure of foraying into non-tradtional RCM-based coins and we can go back to Canadian themed (history/science/geography/zoology/philosophy, art etc) coins. And if we really are struggling for topics outside the Canadian realm, let's at least pick topics/themes that are tasteful and inspiring. These BMvSM coins truly scream of lack of imagination.

I think it's more about trying to appeal to everyone. The Mint does still produce tradition coins; they've just added the pop culture stuff. As long as they continue with the former, I guess I can accept the necessary evil of the latter.
Unfortunately, for me, it tarnishes their image (pun intended) as a quality coin producing mint.
My advice to them long term is stick to your knitting. Stop trying to be everything to everyone or you'll be nothing to anyone.

Lets face it these coins will get very close to, if not an actual sell out. They will not do well on the secondary market. The 2015 are starting to sell below issue when auctioned on ebay. However, that's not a concern of the mint.

The Superman/Batman coins will sell out at the Mint for sure but that is really irrelevant. The RCM makes a big deal of coins being "sold out" but big dealers and Canada Post buy a big chunk of them. For example, the Coat of Arms piedfort is sold out at the mint but is readily available for issue at dealers and Canada Post. Its the collectors who determine which coins are popular, not the Mint.

For what it's worth. I got an email a few hours ago saying that 1/3 of the gold are sold out. It is going to be released to the rest of the "MC" members tonight at midnight.

All the mint really cares about, is that the coins sell out on their end. When it sells out they will surely issue more. When the movie comes out, the response will be interesting.

Many very well stated points of view - all round - on this thread. Clearly, the consensus for most in this community is to look away repulsively on movie themed coins... Wondering what kind of market research has the RCM expanding with a "disneyfication" division of operations. The question remains...will this direction result in more new likely...younger, fans of the game...and in turn repel loyal ones? Is this just about demographics?

Quote: When the movie comes out, the response will be interesting. We checked the trailer with the kid...He likes Batman and all the super-heroes stuff (8 yrs old). So what did he tell me: "It will be probably nice to see fighting and shooting, but also endless speeches and explains. Sucky idea, cause both them good and 'in real world' they will not fight each other". So....we will save some money for other movie, and this one will download some screener - movie deserves this quality. And the coins - Lenticular one, just to see the picture changes on the sticker.

@ Silveroid, your son seems wise beyond his years. I don't get the verses part either, of course I am not a fan of these movies. Of course I am of the older generation.
Its quite possible that the mint is marketing to the under 35 crowd with these coins. It would be interesting to hear, if the under 35 collector finds these appealing.

Thank you, Poket_Change I am not the fan either, of all these "vs" movies. Still remember, how we are, the kids asked in joke: "Who is more powerful: Bruce Lee or Ninja Turtles?", "Terminator T800 or Robocop?" ....... and after years we have this wasn't "Alien vs Predator" kind of boring comedy? what we will see soon , The Federation (Star Trek) vs Empire (SW) ? And all this junkish stuff came to our coins. RCM just tries to get the maximum from the license.

I see mts has sold a couple of these coins already. When do they start shipping from the mint. The emblem and lenticular are my choices. They should of left wonder woman off, its too cluttered with her. I guess this is the state of coins in the 21st century.

Preordered my gold coin from the mint. Even with the poor design, I'm too big of a fan to just pass. I agree with previous posts that these coins will sellout. How they do on the secondary market is another question. On the upside. These coins will definitely introduce a new younger generation to the hobby, which is good for all of us. As long as the RCM can balance traditional coins with pop culture without going overboard, it will be a win win for all.
