What model of Whites are you using and what settings are you using? Whites have pretty good discrimination.

i started with a garrett gtax550. then I got the gti2500. I found a lot of stuff with both machines. however, it was only when I started using a minelab explorer xs that I feel like I was really detecting. I have pulled a wheat out of dry ground from a measured 11.5 inches, and it even sounded and ID'd as a coin. other detectors may hear deep targets, but they're so deep that they ID as something much lower on the scale than a coin, so they're passed up more often. with the explorer I had a 20-silver day from a pounded park and constantly find great, old coins in the same hole with nails and bottlecaps. the explorers are definitely heavier machines, and they may take a bit longer to truly master, but it's definitely my weapon of choice! good luck out there! We've got a Jetco and a Goldak "Commander" - just getting the kids into detecting and so far they're having a blast. If they keep having fun, we'll upgrade to something umm.. this century . I need to find some manuals for these things.. got 'em at a yard sale for $20 (couldn't resist at that price) but of course, user manuals not supplied.

Quote: I want a Garrett Infinium LS so bad I can taste it. That machine is only good if you're in the middle of nowhere. It picks up cellphones, microwave towers, electric grids, etc. Way too sensitive. 40% are returned as unusable, through no fault of the machine.

I have the Garrett 250 and it is sweet for a novice like me. My kids have a blast with it in the school yards. They have managed to scrape up about $30 in 9 months. Best finds for them is jewelry at the beach and a Sac dollar. It was worth every penny for the enjoyment it provides. Thanks BiggFredd! nlp

I now have a White's DFX and I love it. It's not a beginner machine but it does have pre-loaded programs to get you started. You can also design your own custom programs for whatever soil conditions you're digging in and the type of target you're going after (eg. coins, jewelry, relics). It's not cheap but I wanted something that I didn't have to upgrade in a year or so. Previously, I had a White's Eagle and before that an old White's Coinmaster. Once you decided on a metal detector, don't expect it to "attract" treasures to you. You have to listen to the signals the machine is producing and how it reacts to different targets and conditions. I've gone over areas that were "hunted out" and found some incredible items. And the more I got used to my new metal detector, I realized that some of the weaker signals, even though they sounded like trash, were actually very deep, old coins. The sound was slightly different and that's something you'll learn with experience. It's all in knowing what your machine is commumicating to you and how well you interpret it. I couldn't be happier with my choice.
