I was given a nice metal detector for Christmas and I am anxious to use it in my never ending search for that special coin(the free one, I guess). Is there any of you that use these? Maybe I should ask, Is there any of you who have had any luck using one of these?

I have had several metal detectors. I no longer hunt with them for the following reasons: 1. Most good sites have been hunted out. 2. I got back trouble from all the work digging up pull tabs and clad coins 3. The few good coins were all in such awful condition that they were basically culls. 4. Digging in winter I got into some poison ivy roots and almost had to be hospitalized. 5. I realized the reason I was doing it was to acquire old US coins. Since what I really wanted to do was to collect these coins, there were faster and better ways to get them. Good luck!

I think metal detecting is more fun if you do it because you enjoy doing it on your free time, and not because you want to look for some long lost treasure, gold, etc. And if ever you find that treasure then that could be a bonus on what you enjoy doing.

Billy, metal detecting is a blast, I encourage you to go for it. Even if you never find anything, at least you're outside "thinking" while you wave your detector around. Some of my best thoughts and ideas have come while finding nothing on a day of detecting. And ManilaGT, looking for long lost treasure is more fun than you can imagine. You do your research, you arrange your trip and when you're 30 ft underwater on the possible wrecksite of a sunken Spanish Galleon and your detector starts to sing, you get a rush so intense you'll swear your heart is going to explode. IMHO, that is one of the best coin collecting experiences you can have.

I love to metal detect. Not even .001 percent of the land in the world has seen a metal detector, so there are plenty of places to go. I find enough clad to pay for the batteries, so there is no ongoing costs. The few pieces of jewelry I find are very exciting. The occasional relic is also interesting. But the most important part is just being outside and enjoying the day. I doubt I will ever add to my coin collection but I do add to my quality of life.

I am hooked on metal detecting!! I bought an upper end unit back in August and was able to use if for a couple of months until the snow fell. The silver coins that you get are usually in the same condition as they were when they were lost. I have also found large cents that were in incredible condition. It seems that the newer coins are the ones that deteriorate the fastest. Soil condition plays a big part in the quality of the items that you retrieve. I have hundred year old coins that are in far better shape that something lost a year ago. My five cent silver collection dates from 1897 to 1920 and they were all found while metal detecting. I can't wait for spring to get at it again!

Zincolns are garbage. Take a propane torch to a Zincoln and a Lincoln and watch the new coin roll into a wadwhile theold one loses its oxydation.
