I know this coin is clad in silver and is a thin layer. Wouldn't I see copper in the crevice of the damage.

Is it a a 1972 s right? As long as it is a silver clad it's 40% silver. That is a lot more then silver plating thickness wise.

Your coin is copper clad only the san fran mint made 40% silver ikes

The nickel layer isn't that thin. You wouldn't see copper. Another coin hit it, pressing the nickel into the coin.
