I sometimes take chances on auctions with bad photos. Last week I bid on a lot containing an 1858 Flying Eagle and a truly beat up 1863 Indian (now proudly displayed on the "Worst Coins on ebay" Thread).

I won them for 99 cents plus $2.54 shipping.

I got them today and, after giving the Flying Eagle a quick soak in distilled water that took off almost all the green, I'm pretty pleased with what I have.

It's obviously a "Details" coin, most likely a metal detecting find, but it has a lot of details on it.

Here are the auction photos followed by the coin after soaking. I'm going to give it another peroxide bath.

Sorry . . . I just reread my initial post where I said I soaked it in distilled water. I actually soaked it in hydrogen peroxide initially and it's back in there for a few minutes.

I use peroxide to clean ancient coins as well. It does a good job loosening up dirt and other things on coins.

Here it is after a few minutes in hydrogen peroxide. The rest of the green appears to be gone.

That FE was in great shape when it was drop in the ground. Not a bad lot for .99 .

I have a jar of Renaissance Wax standing by for coins like this. I apply it to a lot of my ancient Roman coins for protection.
