I sometimes take chances on auctions with bad photos. Last week I bid on a lot containing an 1858 Flying Eagle and a truly beat up 1863 Indian (now proudly displayed on the "Worst Coins on ebay" Thread). I won them for 99 cents plus $2.54 shipping. I got them today and, after giving the Flying Eagle a quick soak in distilled water that took off almost all the green, I'm pretty pleased with what I have. It's obviously a "Details" coin, most likely a metal detecting find, but it has a lot of details on it. Here are the auction photos followed by the coin after soaking. I'm going to give it another peroxide bath.     Paul Bulgerin

I'm interested to see what it looks like after the peroxide soak, fun stuff getting lots and experimenting.

Sorry . . . I just reread my initial post where I said I soaked it in distilled water. I actually soaked it in hydrogen peroxide initially and it's back in there for a few minutes.
I use peroxide to clean ancient coins as well. It does a good job loosening up dirt and other things on coins.

Here it is after a few minutes in hydrogen peroxide. The rest of the green appears to be gone.   Paul Bulgerin

nice job on the cleaning good little ebay auction find... anyone want to post a couple links to the cleaning threads? I would be interested in hearing the methods of getting off some of the caked on gunk. Thanks. |

That FE was in great shape when it was drop in the ground. Not a bad lot for .99 .

I have a jar of Renaissance Wax standing by for coins like this. I apply it to a lot of my ancient Roman coins for protection.
