Hey everyone a while back a read on here about someone putting coins with holes on them on your key chain. I thought that was an awesome idea so I got a braided hair large cent that I had with a hole in it and put it on it. I love the way it looks and it's started up some good conversations with other coin collectors, people I would have never known collected. My question is how much does a hole hurt a coins value I'm looking for a Morgan dollar and didn't know how much I should pay if I can find one with a hole in it. And if anyone on here wants to help my cause I'll gladly pay for any coins with holes that I don't have on the keychain already.  thanks everyone and have a great day. |

I think that holes always hurt a coin's value (unless it had the hole as part of the design). It is a cool way to strike up a conversation with someone. You could consider putting a coin in a bezel that goes around the rim, but I would expect lots of damage from the coin hitting your car keys.

Oh yeah I definitely know it hurts the value just wondering how much. I just wanna make sure when I buy them I'm getting a fair price and so is the person selling the coin.

The hole pretty effectively erases any numismatic value, and you're only left with a coin's silver value. As far as silver dollars go, many LCS have a box of junk/holed/cull dollars that can be had for only a modest premium over their silver value. I picked a holed 1926-S Peace dollar from this bin at one of my LCS last month for only $14. |

Holes in Spanish colonial cobs don't hurt value much. They're collected mostly as historic relics and holes add to their piratey-ness.

At the LCS I help out at, most common date ...common coins the have been holed trade around their silver value. I do see Morgan dollars like this once in a while .. they are bought and sent off to be melted. Not sure if it is still there, but there was a nice XF Barber half dollar that looked great, but with hole. I think they were trying to get more ... something like $45 ... last I knew there was no offers on it. I see dimes and Half Dimes often with holes. I don't remember anyone waiting to buy one. |

Yeah I'm sure not many people actually look for coins with holes  I just think it's neat on my key chain. So far I have the large cent, Buffalo nickel and a Peace dollar. I'll post pics later. Edited by Justinwd

On my earlier post, I was just posting about the holed coins I have seen.
I did not comment on what a cool idea it is to put them on a key chain.
I should have expressed I do like the idea. And if I see the right coin,
I might do the same thing.

I would think a holed Morgan would sell for a couple of bucks above spot. I would hold out for a better condition one. Here is my holed and counter stamped 40% Kennedy I found in a roll (it was already holed and counter stamped)   |

Great idea but, don't get the keychain to heavy as the weight of the coins will eventually wear out your ignition. Just a helpful thought.
