Do pennies rust? I'm trying to figure out why the weird color.
Any ideas?

Most likely just some rusting because its a copper penny, But I'm not no expert so I may be wrong.

Copper tends to turn green when water is left on a coin.
1943 damaged coin:

Dark color could be a stain on the coin.

Rust appears on items made of steel.

Some coins can tone with a bit of rust color:

Copper coins can have rust on them, but only as a transfer stain from being in contact with an iron object.

The answer to your question '' Do Pennies Rust ''? The answer is NO . only 1943 pds cents rust, as they are steel and plated with zinc.
