I saw this in a box of pennies and it looks like some sort of error. I noticed it with my naked eye. I'm not exactly sure what I'm looking at, but it looks like some sort of D shape underneath the D. Any help on what exactly I'm look at will help. It doesn't look like a double die but some other figure under the 3 that I cannot make out.
Split plating is when something makes a puncture through the plaiting. This can see from strike damage from too much pressure being used. This will allow air to reach the surface of the zinc. When this happened the zinc starts to breakdown (rot). It will rise, then fall because of the deterioration of the zinc underneath and eventually the plating will tear away. None of this is collectable, but a death sentence for the coin.
