well done gidjit!
I have yet to own one but will be aiming for it soon. I can't imagine amassing 50! And these look to be in good condition too. At least VG-F, and some seem promising for VF

thanks for all the responses.

How do you just "come across" 1858 cents, so that you can "hang on" to them?

well I have a couple sources where I buy collections, I keep certain ones and sell off the rest and do it again. ebay used to be the place to do this but lately these sets have been way overpriced and the quality has been disappointing,
my problem is I'm lazy so I have not been listing many coins lately so I'm getting quite the pile.

I have rolls of large cents, but certainly not rolls of 1858!

i am now able to make rolls of most years for example I have over 200 1901's alone
i am about 5 coins away from a roll of 1891 small date coins and about 15 w9/8's shy of a roll for that.

Gidjit that's an extraordinary accomplishment! You might be very interested in picking up a copy of Dr Haxby's book - Striking Impressions. The first portion of the book extensively outlines various pre-RCM coinage and currency used in Canada, a very fascinating read which puts context into what you've collected.

you know I really need some more books as all I know is whats in the Charlton and what I have learned here,,so if I should search for any other varieties I dont know about I am willing to listen.

actually I think some will grade AU-MS I do have some G's ,VG's but I think the average would be VF
i have posted many of these in the "grading" section of this forum over the past

1858s are scarce, but the mintage was not exactly small (ca. 1.5 million).
JHAX I know you are an expert on province of canada coinage this is why I am scratching my head because I thought the mintage was 421k am I missing something

Yes, you are, Gidjit: about 1,000,000 of them. The figure of 421,000 was first published by Fred Bowman and was widely copied by catalogers. His fictitious figure came from two Royal Mint accounts for the entire 1858-59 Province of Canada cent coinage. One account gave 10,000,000 and the other gave 421,000 less. He assumed the difference was the 1858 coinage. In fact the total 1858-59 cent coinage was 9,690,388. This is a firm figure; it was the actual number of cents received as given in Canadian government accounts.

I've already talked about the hoard of cents I examined in the 1970s that contained over 50 1858s. It was at that time that I first realized Bowman's figure must be way too low, because the 1858's in the hoard were from many different dies. Either the die life had to be extremely short or, more likely, the mintage was much higher than 421,000.

My estimate for the true mintage comes from a calculation that assumes that on average every Prov. of Canada cent reverse die struck the same number of coins. Thus, multiplying the total mintage (9,690,388) by the probable number of 1858 dies (53) and dividing by the total number of dies (363) gives the 1858 mintage as 1,388,155. By a more complex calculation Rob Turner comes to a very similar figure in his catalog of the 1858 dies.

Thanks, NH_collector. Do you know the weight (or size) of one of these kegs?

I wonder if there is a keg or two still hidden somewhere?

1858 Large Cent is hardly rare or scarce. Popular and slightly elusive for two reasons. One it is a first year of issue for Canadian Provincial coinage and two the erroneous mintage figure of 421000.
Nice job acquiring fifty of them ....only if bought cheaply. In my opinion this coin makes the top ten list of overrated Canadian coin issues.

Gidjit, you seem to be someone who is up for challenges. Here's one for you: amass a roll of 1884 Obv. 1 cents, not worrying about condition. Still, that will take you a bit longer than the 1858s did, I'll bet!

I had 12 of them at one point, including one in an MS-60 flip....
