Hi Everyone, A couple recent purchases, curious to see what people think they would grade: 1) 1882-CC   2) 1878-S   3) 1904-O   I have a few more which I'll probably photograph in the next couple days. Thanks! |

I'd grade all three as MS-64. Sometimes the TPGs give CC coins a boost and call coins like your 1882-CC MS-65, but since it's a common date they might not do that.

The 78s could have some graffiti as to the right of the date it looks like 127-, and there is a slash mark for the cents.

65, 64, 64. Nice examples all.
I think the 127 on the obverse of the 1878-S could possibly be a Museum inventory code. Many museums used a enamel ink to mark coins with an inventory number, and that might be why it is there.

Grades are going to be heavily dependent on luster and I'm not seeing the luster well in the images. That said, and based on subdued luster, I would grade them:
MS63 - strike & luster don't look great.
MS64 - if the luster is good.
MS64 - again based on luster as the strike is average.
Eye appeal is better than average on all three and with good luster they could go a point higher easily.

I would say all three are probably 64 as well, though the '78 seems to have the surfaces of a 65, which it could well make if lusterous.

Thanks for all the replies. The 1882-CC and 1878-S have some lustre, particularly the 1878 with the 1904-O quite subdued. Thanks for the VAM link Dave, I always like to try work out the VAM attribution when I buy these. I have another 3 of similar grade which I will post up in a separate thread when I can. I was wondering about the "127", could very well be ink as you said moxking. |

I'm at 62, 64, 64. If you look closely at the first coin it looks like the chin has a very broad scrape that covers a good portion of the surface. Might just be the pictures but on my monitor it looks kind of bad.
