What the hatters were making was beaver fir felt, for beaver hats. Unfortunately for them, the mercury they used in the process was very toxic and could cause mental issues. Hence the term, "mad as a hatter". Of course, we always think of the mad hatter in Alice in Wonderland.

The * is used in connection with State 1, the initial state of a die where it doesn't show any signs of use/deterioration. We assume that coins exist in State 1 for every die. If that state has yet to be recorded, it is marked with a *.

Derek, where are you? You'd made a good start before, but it's also necessary to think outside the box (whatever that is) a little....

You list 5 known reverses and identify a number of other
possible, howbeit currently unknown, reverses.

Yes, Doug. You thought outside the box in suggesting that the possibilities included as yet unreported reverses. But climb back into the box now and name the most likely reverse(s), considering the obverse die state....

Howbeit, somewhat unscientific...
my 65A1 / J 23's are state 1 & 2.
my 65a2 / J 23a's span the spectrum.
my 65a3 / P 4's are states 6 & 7.
my 65a4 / P 4a is state 7.
my 65a5 /

I pressed the wrong key and the reply was posted prematurely.

my 65a5 / P4b is state 7.

65a2 / J23 is the only variety of obverse 8 I have.
65a4 & 65a5 are strong contenders for obverse state 8,
but I currently do not have any of this state.

A 65a2 with that late of obverse die state would mean the J23 reverse die had an earlier and late use with the same obverse die, (with other reverse dies used in between) wouldn't it? That would be really interesting. Can you show us photos of that one Doug?

While we're waiting to finalize No. 21, I've started the next thread, which begins with No. 22.

Below is the die combination table from the Obv. 65a file on my site. According to it the only combination I've seen with Obv. 65a in State 8 is Rev. P4b. Now, it's entirely possible that Doug has found a P4b coupled with a 65a in State 7. In any case the Mystery Coin is 65a+P4b.

RESURRECTION TIME

Quote:
What Haxby Variety Number is this?
Each 2 or 3 days I will put up a different variety
starting with Number 1

I have 9 more to list --a guess which 1 is this --- but OBV side only to start with.

Wow, Kiwi ... you're not even going to try to go through the guide first and look it/them up? The coin you posted is not a good example. I wasn't aware that a scratched coin could perk your interest.

Yes, it's been a while since the "trackers" disciplines started their discourses. Glad that you enjoy your new toys. They should start with "Gee, whiz".
