Time for the 13th Century! I thought that I might start things off with a penny from Scotland. It was minted between 1280 and 1286 for Alexander III. The attribution is Spinks 5053.

According to wikipedia, Alexander III died when he fell off his horse on the way to visiting his 2nd wife for her birthday. Without a clear royal heir, this seems to have plunged Scotland into a bit of a power vacuum. His death was memorialized in an early Scotts poem by Andrew of Wyntoun:

Quote:
Quhen Alysandyr oure kyng was dede,
That Scotland led in luve and le,
Away was sons of ale and brede,
Of wyne and wax of gamyn and gle.
Oure gold was changed into lede,
Cryst, born into vyrgynyte,
Succoure Scotland and remede,
That stat is in perplexyte.

This coin has been in the family for 75+ years, belonging to both my great grandfather and grandfather before it was passed down to me.

Here is my only 13th century coin. A penny of Henry III of England. It is a long cross issue, minted under the moneyer of Henri in London between the years of 1251 and 1272. The Spink number is S.1368, class 5b2.

Alexander III of Scotland, first coinage (long cross and stars) penny.

The spelling of the moneyer's name is unusual and we've been unable to trace another example for the full reading. We feel that Robert at Berwick is the most likely.( taken from UKDFD)

Issue Date: 1250 - c.1280

@petrus, very true. I had to wait several years before finding one of nice quality at a price I could stomach.

@gooner, it is nice to see a couple other Scots coins represented. Nice work!
