Oddly shaped coins sell out (Maple Leaf, Psyanka) and this coin will be no different.

They sell out but they are not coins-
New gold trek item resembles a brooch to be worn on ones lapel perhaps as the crew would on the starship-

Do we know for sure its not a coin?

The badges or whatever you want to call them will be a big hit among Trekies , well if they can afford it that is lol.

If its a coin , not so much.

Is that the issue price?

Sorry I should not have put that price out there since I don't know that it is correct. (I don't appreciate it when people state guesses as fact either lol).

I got that number by working back from C4F's ebay price of $2000. He generally adds 25-30% of the issue price as a premium.

El-cheapo stuff, commercialized jewelry

But of cause will be popular...i do not like the trend, but no one actiually told that the coin has to be round or square only.

I would buy for the fun the Polar Bear shaped 2oz silver proof silver coin, with some arctic theme (Canadian) design on the coin. If will be priced correctly.
But it will be shame to show this among "serious" coins

Added:
according to the members of other forum, the coin could be priced CAD 1200...well, it is not so expensive. Lets say, it will be hot, so could be easily sold for $2000.
Meaning, possible to make $800 just in few clicks.

Thanks, that makes sense.

mario95coin has his listed at $1,949.95, so you're probably close.

Apparently it's called a "Star Trek Delta" (also the name of the coin) and you can buy them as cuff links or necklaces or badges for between 15 and 60 bucks on line.

But imagine how special one would be riding the bus to the next Comicon sporting a solid gold $200 "delta" with QE11 on the back? lol

added: Have to say I'm surprised by the optimize. Guaranteed sell-out, easy $800 etc. etc. To me, this is just another indication that the RCM has lost it's way.

The gold piece appears to be patterned after a Star Trek communications badge that was worn on the left side of the uniform shirt (chest level).

The RCM has included the Queen's portrait and a denomination so it can technically be called a "coin," but it is so far removed from what a coin is meant to be that I can only refer to them as medals with a symbolic denomination added for nostalgia purposes (and to improve the chances of selling them to coin collectors who look down upon medals).

Just checked for curiosity :
The Star Trek silver coins flooded ebay, making whole theme very cheap. So the addition of RCM ones probably will not make a difference.

But, except the gold coin-like item. This will be the first one and should have significant demand.
As I can understand - MC people already loading them via the Reps.

I can't help but reflect on the possibility that a portion of Canada's liquidated gold reserves, even some of the melted 1912-1914 gold coins, went into the minting of a Hollywood trademarked science fiction spaceship, by the hands of a Canadian Crown Corporation.

Obviously RCM does not have any sort of mandate that involves promoting and enhancing the image of Canada and I wonder how that came to be.

Why is the US mint not minting these types of coins?

Not sure it matters much to me where the gold came from. Once it's melted it melted.

I believe (and I could be wrong) that US coins must pass through several levels of bureaucracy and government (including POTUS) in order to be legislated for creation.

In Canada, apparently anyone can throw anything at the wall and if it sticks, the RCM will make it.

In the US, new coins must be:

a) Proposed in the US Congress by either a Senator or Representative in their respective chamber (i.e., Senate or House)
b) Passed by the full House and Senate
c) Approved and signed into law by the President

This process definitely curtails most attempts of questionable uses of US coins.

Thank you. In Canada it appears only the Minister of Finance rubber stamps NCLT designs.

RCM FAQ
"All coin products are subject to Government approval:

Non-circulation coin designs are the responsibility of the Minister responsible for the Royal Canadian Mint;
Circulation coins are authorized by Order in Council."

I sense most of us are purist or certainly close...so RCM's direction towards pop, commercial, novelty isn't sitting well with us...and more so of late because it's getting to be overkill...
Multiples of;
Superman
Batman
Bugs bunny...
I know I've missed some...
And now soon...
Star Trek
But there is a large number of folk that love these types of themes...

That's a good reason why buyers of these types of coin ought to heavily support Canada remaining in the British Commonwealth. Over the years, the monarchy loosened it's direct control over the Royal Canadain Mint and we are where we are today. But if the Queen was not the Head of State, if Canada was formally independent, would our Cdn Head of State agree to the issuing of legal tender bearing the image of Mickey Mouse or cutout science fiction spaceships? I think not!
