Need Help Identifying Gold Ghana Coin

BenW New Member United States 2 Posts	Posted 07/12/2016 11:00 pm Hi, I need help identifying this gold Ghana coin, I believe it is a one ounce coin from Ghana, but I cannot find pictures of it anywhere or what it may be worth. (even though it is pretty worn) the only mention on the internet is here http://www.wbcc.fsnet.co.uk/af-gha.htm part the way down the page is found this "Another coin mentioned there was a one-ounce Gold coin made in 1997 for Ghana, it was to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Ghana's independence. This independence had been attained 6th March 1957. I have seen no sign of this coin in the numismatic market or press as yet" and later: " The Gold coin mentioned in the original article (above) is pictured on the Bank of Ghana site - see page... http://www.bog.gov.gh/aboutus/goldcoi2.jpg The "coin" can be seen to be without denomination The Bank of Ghana's relevant press release (dated 24th February 1999) about this Gold coin - see page... http://www.bog.gov.gh/notices/notice99/no99-16.htm gives details that these pieces originally went on sale at 1 million Cedis each and contained very very close to 1 Troy Ounce of pure Gold. The notice gives no denomination details, however if the Ghanian authorities have declared the piece to have a face value of (for example) 1 million Cedis then the piece is a coin of that face value. Without a documented legal tender value nor a denomination within the coin design the piece is purely a medallic item." both of the above links are broken. sorry about the image quality, all I have is my iphone. It seems surprising that something that valuable would get that much wear in under 20 years. It also doesn't look like gold and the production quality is to poor for a gold coin. BenW New Member United States 2 Posts	Posted 07/13/2016 09:05 am I took it to a coin shop in my hometown and they said it was gold, plus it weighs about an ounce. I'm no expert so I suppose it could not be gold, but I still would like to know what it is. Report this Post to the Staff
