Thanks everyone this has been really helpful. Is there a good book on gold coins like the Red Book I have on Morgans?

I would say get the classic head half eagles and quarter eagles in the VF to AU range. Their value is not tied to gold, but that means the numismatic premium is pretty high. If you are more of a bullion investor than a numismatic investor, then I would suggest EF-MS Libery $5.00 or Indian $2.50.

The thing is that gold prices make up a great part of the value of more common gold coins ,and nobody has a infallible idea of where gold prices will go next. I follow the saying "buy low and sell high". Prices of gold on the spot market are historically high. However, if you buy them as works of art which many surely are then the gold price is not so important. When gold value is high then numismatic value falls. When gold price falls then numismatic value tends to rise. Just buy what you like! If you can get them in AU condition that look good you save a lot IMO. Often I see certain gold coins that almost double in value between AU and MS60. If they are more common coins I just don't see it.

Pre 1865 San Francisco half eagles, any cc, and $10 Indians. In any condition you can afford. Satisfying to stack and to handle in low grades when you rarely find them, and to own in higher grades when you can afford them.

There's so much info on Heritage, PCGS and NGC that you don't need a book anymore. I used to have copies of the specific mint books for Carson City and Charlotte (Doug Winter I think) which were entertaining to read...but mostly just eye candy for me...

In my opinion, the best-looking US gold coin minted after 1850, the $10 Indian.

I like the books to read in bed and stuff a bit hard with a laptop. I guess I just like books. I found two red books on this, one on double eagles one on gold dollars

I think I am trying to kill two birds one is get coins I enjoy and one is get something that will keep it's value. If the coin is close to melt I personally think that long term, I am thinking ten or twenty years, the price of gold will at a minimum keep up with inflation. If anything the numismatic value should also go up over time but that is subjective.

What I am not trying to do is invest and look to make a short term (or even long term) profit. I leave that to experts in the field. I just want to try my best to get something that holds it's values.

So I am leaning towards $5 eagles as the best mix of affordably and size

I use the Encyclopedia of US Gold Coins 1795-1933 as reference material before I purchase a gold coin. The book was published in 2008, but not much has changed regarding the reference information. It has retail price guides that are out of date. It does have a section of information about each date and mint (as shown below), a coin photo and an overview of the series. I paid $30 for a used hardback copy.

The U.S. gold coin to collect?
I have a rather nice example of all of the major U.S.gold denominations.
Take a look at the cover of the
Encyclopedia of U.S. gold coins.

A 'no brainer'; this coin has beauty, significant bullion value, and a reasonable numismatic premium mainly due to it's beauty, and always resellable.
A bit like having money in the bank, without needing a bank!

Just make sure that it is genuine.
I am not a fan of slabs, but perhaps justifiable in this case, with reassurance of honest grading, implied authenticity, and excellent protection from accidental damage.

I would vote for a type set of all the gold denominations. I am working on a set in MS63 and it will be a several year endeavor with my budget.

I agree with those saying $2 1/2 Indians. Only 15 to collect, with only one being really pricey. You can get a decent weak D for under $2,000. I buy and sell these all the time, so if you are interested, shoot me a message.

Silly me...looks like I didn't read the question in the thread title.

jwitten I don't see a private message function on this forum is there one? Tried to send you an email but you have it blocked for accepting ones from members.

I don't like the Indians all that much, something about the look turns me off, but would be interested in Liberties
