In my opinion, the best-looking US gold coin minted after 1850, the $10 Indian.

And I find them probably the LEAST attractive US gold coin (Before some of the modern commemoratives.)

I could be mistaken, but did'nt Augustus Saint-Gaudens use movie star Tom Cruise in Indian head dress as his model for the $10 Gold Eagle?

GR58, what grade are those in? Is it hard to find quarter eagles unslabbed for this set these days?

@Slider23 -- There's nothing on Wikipedia about Tom Cruz as the model, just a note that Saint-Gaudens "based his head of Liberty on a model he had sculpted, but ultimately not used, for the statue of Victory in the Sherman Monument in New York City." (I can't even find anything for "Tom Cruz" -- is that the right name?)

My bad, I misspelled his name Tom Cruise.

That would explain it. And here I was looking for another silent film star I hadn't heard of before.

TOm cruise on a gold coin... You want the truth? You can't handle the truth! Tom Cru*** already did a lot of bad stuff with the Jack Reacher film by trying to be Jack Reacher - can he please stay off my gold coins?

Anyway, to me, there is no 'bad' gold to collect. All gold is good gold. To be honest, I like type sets, so I'd settle for a type set of as many 'Murican gold coins as possible.

Otherwise... there's a lot of foreign gold which can be bought at spot or just over. Ever considered starting a foreign gold collection? There are some beauties out there, too!

Conder - Wait, you think a $1 Gold Type 1 is better looking than the $10 Indian? Surely you jest, sir!

An option I would consider is a mintmark set of $5 gold. You can do the set of all different mints with Liberty Head $5 (no motto and with motto) or expand it with earlier types (classic head for Charlotte, Dahlonega 1838 - or any earlier Philadelphia) or the Indian Head $5 (P, D, S). I think the Laura Gardin Fraser design Washington $5 from 1999 is classic enough that it could be included if you wanted to add the W mintmark for West Point.

Actually yes I do. The stylized headdress, the openmouthed moronic facial expresion and overbite all just combine to make the eagle a very unattractive coin to me. (I have a similar opinion about the Peace dollar. The vacant "light are on but nobody's home mouthbreather" expression with what looks like matted dirty hair is a big turn off.)

Conder <--- waiting to be crucified by all the Saint-Gaudens eagle and Peace dollar lovers. Hey I can't help it that I like what I like and don't like what I don't like.

Condor

Honestly the Peace dollar looks like a Jetson's reject with the rays coming from the head and no I don't like the Indian head coins either.

Funny I do like the Barber coins even though the head looks more like Apollo than liberty (a little masculine) but the Mercury dime doesn't thrill me all that much either. And don't even start on Roosevelt, Ike or Kennedy. Presidents, or either political party, don't belong on coins. That smacks too much of dictatorship style to me. I doubt Washington or Jefferson would ever have wanted to be on a coin

I'm having fun with the S minted $5 libertys..lots of grades and years to choose from and they are reasonable to purchase..
I just love a sharply struck half eagle.
