I write an article for a Korean newspaper that is generally about life in America, with a good bit of cross cultural psychology thrown in. I write these articles while my wife translates them into Korean. This article is about hobbies and collecting in general. Keep in mind that you were not my intended audience when I wrote the article. You'll need to scroll down below the Korean text to get to the article in English (unless you can read Korean!). Enjoy and use this as a "scientific" justification for all those hours you spend with your hobby.

G'day, & thankyou.
Next time I get asked what I've been upto, I might say "flowing" ... or, maybe not.
I never had much time for psychology, but I think Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs makes sense. It seems to me that many Asian cultures evolved against a background where security as to food, shelter, could not be assumed. They tend to see hobbies as a waste of time. In newly-prosperous China, leisure-time is a modern problem, and people seem at a loss to know what to do with themselves.

Great article!! Thanks for helping me understand my feeling of "flow" whenever I start looking at my collection of coins!

I got over 600 web hits and was the number one article of the week in the newspaper it is printed in. What's up with only 53 views (as of 7:00 CST on 3/10)!! Its a pretty good article! Have pity on a poor writer. My wife's articles in the same newspaper usually far outrank me in popularity, but I beat her with this one.
