I have several mint sets that have this thing in them. Does anyone know exactly what this is?

It looks like the top picture is a scratch on the cover. Looks like I can see a shadow from the scratch on the coin inside.

A piece of packaging? Still sealed?

It's not a scratch on the cover. Honestly it looks like a wire. And yes you can see the shadow which means it is not something embedded in the coin itself. I'm just curious if anyone for sure can tell me what it is. My hypothesis is that it is some kind of wire that is used on the presidential coins I only think that because it's only found on the presidential coins in my sets. I believe I have 3 sets with Presidential dollars that have similar wire or thread looking things on top of the coins.

It al depends on what it really is. I would probably leave this on in, unless I was wanting to break up the set.

If you leave it in with the coins then you should store them in a position where it doesn't contact the coins.

First one looks like a thread or, as you say, a wire. The second looks as if he was crying as he stuck his head out a car window. Of course, I'm no expert on either - not that I'd admit anyway.

Still trying to find out what these are. Has anyone else found these in their sets?

Are these "attached" to the coin or are then just floating around in the packaging?

I just recently got a message back from a representative at the US Mint that they think it may have been scratched during packaging. But they dont look like scratches. It looks like a thread or wire?

First could be a die crack, not sure. Second looks like a die scratch that occurred prior to the laser etching of the die.

I agree with Conder101.The first one looks like a Die Crack. The second one looks like a Die Scratch.
Errers and Varietys.

If the two are the same size, then the debris was on that spot. then was laser etched and later fell off and is now floating in the cello/packing.

So decided to reexamine these and this first one does not look like a thread like I believed it was all these years... looks more like a scratch? If so how rare is this? This is from 2011 silver proof set.
