I don't think I've posted this one before. It's an 1859 Half Dime, graded by NGC. This coin is considered something of a a one-year type since the obverse stars have hollow centers. This feature did not appear for any other years.

See how your opinions stack up against NGC!

I'm a terrible grader, but here's my guess: MS-62.

From what I can see from these photos, this is a very, very nice coin that should go MS-64. There are portions of the rims, however, that are in shadows, and the lighting and focus are not "perfect" so there could be flaws that are minimized or hidden.

I know just how small these little guys are, so getting a good photo is not so easy sometimes, especially when the coin is slabbed.

Hunter--that makes sense. These remind me of the silver 5c "fish scales" of Canada, and those features are often rough due to the size. I'll guess 63-64 too.

nice original patina with mint finish on both obv and rev...MS-63 the only thing keeping this coin from GEM status are the contact marks!

You guys are tough! My photos can't really do justice to this coin, and you need top-quality photos to distinguish between "choice" and "gem". NGC of course had the coin in-hand when they made their decision:

By the photos above, I would have said 62/63. Obviously, some of that "chatter" on the coin was some other anomaly.
