The RCM does outsource the assembly of the pilo yearly sets, oh Canada, etc as such one can see how an employee could have had some 2015 loonies left overs or the bulk bin from Winnipeg was not completely empty of last years loonies and the thrid party company just made the sets until the packaging mistake was noticed.

A couple clarifications:

Quote:
All sets are minted and assembled at the Ottawa mint*,

Nope. Sets which contain circulation coins are packaged (locally, by contract) from coins supplied form the Winnipeg Mint.

the dies are all made at the Ottawa mint

Not anymore... for circulation coins.

I do not believe that the boutique has anything to do with ordering circulation coins for businesses...

Wrong. You can purchase rolls of circulating coins from the mint boutique in Ottawa. The one exception, is that they are sold as a "numismatic item", and therefore taxable. When the RCM Masters Club used to matter to me - I would purchase rolls of $1 and $2 coins at the boutique, and have those purchases credited to my Masters Club account...

oh (I couldn't quote John, and not you) - see this is all new to me.
I have come to understand that ALL sets and coins were made at the Ottawa mint - when did this change?

I know that the rolls of circulation coins can be purchased from any RCM boutique, but my comment was specifically about businesses which needed coins;
As I have understood it businesses wouldn't order from the mint/boutique, as there is a premium something akin to 25% above face value for any roll purchased - and then tax is added to the "cost" of the roll(s).
(it's been a couple years since I have bought rolls so I may be wrong on the surcharge percentage - I think a roll of quarters was something like $12.50, a roll of pennies was like $0.75 ect)
For a business to acquire coin rolls in this manner would be very cost prohibitive - especially when they can get them from their bank at face value.

I enjoyed for a couple years buying "regular" rolls of coins from the mint online when I was unable to visit a boutique in person - I really enjoyed having it shipped to my door (even if the postman was rather daft in placing a box clearly showing RCM logos at my door facing the street (thankfully nothing was stolen), but it appears as though I can no longer do this...
(but it might be for the best, because I might otherwise continue to buy rolls of coins from the mint - I don't make it to Winnipeg as often as I used to before my Grandmother passed away.)

A good 20 years or more out sourcing has been going on, companies in general never order their coins through the RCM, just their bank as such each main bank branch does their own central recycle coins only when they are really low they place an order to Winnipeg and get an large order of new coins and they are charged the handling and shipping fees, the same as any collector or any coin dealer does to get large stocks.

A couple of years ago, I read an article in a German newspaper that said that high-speed circulation presses at the German Mints (we have five!) can make 750 coins per minute.

@unruhjonny:
Of course, coins are sometimes minted before the calender year. Recent example: 967.000 ''2014 Lucky Loonies'' were minted in 2013. (Source: Annual RCM reports).

When I checked on Wednesday this week, Colonial Acres had 26 rolls of the regular 2016 loon. They are now showing out of stock.

How did I miss this topic!? This is definitely an interesting turn of events. I have one 2016 loonie I bought on ebay. Sounds like I might need more. I find it interesting that the RCM is not as forthcoming with mintage numbers...is this by design or don't they really know themselves? I think the US Mint releases the numbers a lot sooner. I would love to see another '91! Might check on some ICCS 2016 loonies. If mintages are that low it might be a good buy.

The RCM used to be very forthcoming with their mintage numbers. These figures were released in the Annual Reports which were published in March--May of the following year.
Unfortunately, and much to my regret, that changed with the 2015 Report. There were now mintage figures. Neither for circulaltion coinage, nor NCLT or Bullion. Don't know why. Perhaps it's because of the new CEO.
We could get an indication on how ''rare'' the regular 2016 Loonie is when the mintage numbers of circulation coins is updated on the RCM website. But these figures are not as detailed as they were in the Annual Reports.

I did a check last night on ebay and there were a lot of rolls available...possibly it's just that the mint has delayed putting these coins into circulation and that's why few have been seen? Either way, it probably wouldn't hurt to put a few rolls away in case...does anyone know for certain when we'll know the mintage figures?

PS I live in Winnipeg and think it's time to get a buddy who works at the mint!
