Hi guys, I have a few 8tf '78's, what areas of the coin do you need to see in order to make proper VAM id's? I know the feathers at the bottom where the wings meet the body are crucial, what are the other areas?

Well,I'm No expert, but some markers for a 1878s are...does it have a broken point on the right 4th star of the obverse?Does it have a broken R in IGWT?
If you head over to VAMworld.comhttp://www.vamworld.com/1878-S+VAMs you will find all the pointers to attribute your coin.Hope this helps,Good Luck!

Well, I have a few of these, I wanted to post pictures and I was looking for direction as to what areas are key to the 1878 P so I know where to make sure to get as good a close up as possible

From what I count there are over 50 VAM #'s just for the '78-P 8tf alone, and that's just the attributed list.
First I would start a new thread for each coin (less confusion) and post a cropped picture of the whole coin, both sides. Then show any shots,in detail, that you can find.Such as cracks, dots, bumps,or doubling. Then it's just a matter of matching it too one of the VAM #'s.Which is easier said than done.

Full size images of both the obverse and reverse along with close-ups of the lower wing feathers should be a good start.
