Amber ,I think your Mercury dime will qualify for a low ball designation if sent in . But check with low ball experts .

Looks like the coin was sanded. (you can see scratches on the surface)

I've never seen copper nickels worn down like that. 90% Ag and 10% Cu must be much softer.
