With the mark on the nose, I thinking this is an example of machine damage.

Quote: With the mark on the nose, I thinking this is an example of machine damage. I must disagree Coop, I would think that we would have to see a full picture of the complete obverse before ruling out the possibility of it being a true doubled die obverse, to see if there were any other areas affected. Since reading the January 2015 article in Numismatic News on the discovery of yet another doubled lips DDO in the Roosevelt series, http://www.numismaticnews.net/artic...s-discovered I have searched through thousands of silver Roosevelt dimes from my junk silver stash and I never found any form of doubled lips, not even from obvious Strike Doubling. So far there are only two confirmed dates of "Hot Lips" DDO's, 1953-S and 1964-D. However, the same person that discovered the 1953-S also said he found a 1955-S but has not sent it in yet. Same with the 1964-D, the guy that discovered it says that he discovered a few 64-P's as well. So finding "Hot Lips" DDO's in other dates isn't out of the realm of possibility. Besides, take another look at the OP's image, at the area I have pointed out below. It's interesting, to say the least. Just saying...

Looks like MD with slight amount of die movement after the strike. Looks like a couple lines coming off from nose to the edges if the LIBERTY? Not sure what they are.

I was just reading about this phenomenon with Roosies. I like to collect the silver UNCs and Proofs, then CRH the clad (still havent found a 2009P or D yet). I think that currently this is a Class VIIII variety which is pretty much where everthing goes when no one has come up with a rational-enough answer to how the error occurred. Also, this error/variety has been found in almost all the silver Roosie years. Message me and I'll give you a list of sites for reference (don't want to run risk of being banned by posting them publicly).

Rich, there is a weak clash mark from tip of the Nose toward the I of LIBERTY.Other marks towards the Liberty in previous pics. are just the surface scratches.

A clash on a roosy would usually show on the bridge of the nose/eye area 1st.

Here is an overlay: While it looks close, but if the die was rotated a bit it might affect that area. But I'm seeing extreme die wear on the tops of LIBERTY. so it may be a different issue. But with the closer shot, it is MD on the nose and lips. Not a doubled die.
