I am pretty certain that "S" that you see is a ding from another coin, commonly called bag marks.

More information here: http://goccf.com/t/255544&whichpage=1

It might have been damaged some other way, but whatever happened, didn't happen at the mint.

Keep hunting.

I think the image loaded ok. Looks more like a "B" to me upon magnifying a few times. That said it still resembles a contact mark applied after strike. Thanks, Doug.

If you have the time and/or resources, might you be able to give us a few pictures with the light reflecting off the one cent coin at differing angles (x-, y-, z-axes)?

The new picture is better -- I can see the "S" and I am sorry to say that I still believe that the coin took a hit. The "S" is just the result of metal being displaced from the impact of the hit -- like tiny craters. The displaced metal got smoothed out while in circulation.

Keep hunting, there's still stuff out there waiting to be found.

Could be PSD. I forget what they're called, but I've seen these same type of marks (sometimes 3-5 single-file a at differing depths) on pre-1965 silvers, usually quarter dollars and larger coins.
