Hello. I would like to know which usb microscope camera would be good for a beginner to begin with. Something under $100.00 at this time. Thnx.

Hello Justwalking nice to meet you. No I haven't had a microscope as yet but I thought with my vision problem it would help me inspect and log the image into my collection. I'm new at this and really enjoy it a lot.
I've tried using a hand magnifyer and loupe to no avail.

If my results with cheap setup in "High Magnifaction Sony A7R Mark II" are acceptable for you I can e-mail about configuration. But there not only camera but also few other things, so overall cost would be close to $150-200 range. With $100-120 it is also possible, but with less maximum magnification.

@mcalester, I paid well under $100 for my Celestron Digital Microscope. It has some foibles, but it works well for me.

I paid $45 for mine on Amazon, just says 5 megapixel USB camera with stand. I got this one because others seemed to be less stable with the jointed angle stand. I changed the upright bar to a 14"x5/8" brass bar so camera would move further away for larger coins...found 6" tube only got about half a penny size when fully extended. Not letting me post pix at moment, site must be doing something? Edited by Crazyb0

Thanks for all the replies, CrazyBo I like your set up best. Concerned about magnification with large coins on the 500X / 1000x types which seems a bit much for coins. I am trying to find a 10x / 30x which can be used for large coins also. CrazyBo what magnification do you have on that one?

Thanks @Spence nice to meet you. What is the difference between the 5mpx and a 3mpx as I know nothing about camera stuff ?, lol at all. But I've found that research on such items requires more time now as so much new technology enters the market as with the laptop I bought turned out to be a notebook (sigh). I just want to do it right the first time rather then the 'trial and error' method.

@mcalester, hmm I'm not sure about the difference, although I'm sure someone else on this forum with more knowledge could chime in and tell you. If you lurk around here and read through some of the other posts, you will learn a huge amount. Many of the folks have professional grade set-ups, but others (like myself) have more modest equipment. I would say that the lab stand set-up that @crazyb0 has would be a definite improvement over the arm linkage that I have right now.

Lots of choices out there. I like em cause of the the ease of set up and they take up very little space and the pics aren't all that bad...   Oregon coin geek.....*** GO BEAVS ! ! ! ***

Please note that board rules prohibited to post over 300KB size of pic, so it is not clear to compare cheap and more advanced setup on thumbnail-like pictures. They can looks similar.
But it can look very different on full screen mode with initial resolution when you begin to work.
Also 500/1000X words on USB microscope is only trick for buyers - it is not real optical magnification. Even 10X is hard to obtain with such devices.

McAlester, I really don't know the exact magnification, never been able to figure the calibration format out. But an estimate of closeup for RPM's is about 40-45X and for dollar size coins about 10X. Great for most pix, have to play with onboard led lighting/incandescent background and ambient outside(window) lighting. Most of time LEDs are OK, but will glare on shiny and reflect trying on 2x2's. The difference between 3mp & 5mp is pic size. Depending on format like .jpg is 1280x760 or 1400x800. Those actual #'s may not be right, close, is from memory.  Note my stand pic, on the screen you can see pix of 1963D its currently focused on in max closeup... Edited by Crazyb0

Crazyb0, It is very simple to know exact magnification in terms of Macro photography.
Most of that camera have 1/4" sensor.
Just put any ruler with mm marks and shoot with maximum magnification available.
Then place shot on your screen. How much you can see?
1X mean that you can see about 3.6 mm on width.
If just one mm width on full screen - then it is 3.6X magnification.
To achieve 45X you need to fill full screen with 3.6/45=0,08mm subject.

wow, so much info thnx to all of you. No, I would have to edit the image to post it, but to have the image saved to my storage device is my main purpose to use a scope as well as inspection for mint errors. ( Still shopping ) lol.
