I tried to reply to this topic but I guess it is too old to reopen.

I recently came into possession of a set of 1887 coins. I think most are proof coins, with varying degrees of impairment/cleaning etc. Any thoughts? There was no copper with the coins. Does anyone know if there was a set of 1887 that did not include the copper?

Regarding proof 1887 issue - all silver from crown down to threepence were issued (individually?) as proof coins. Spink makes no mention of 1887 Jubilee 'sets' per se. The only proof set with the jubilee head was the Maundy issue but this was 1888 only. Regarding the copper, no 1887 proof coins are apparent, and in any case, no copper was issued with a jubilee head thus it is logical that the notion of an 1887 set including copper would not be applicable. From your photos it is very difficult to see any proof coins, but unfortunately it does appear that cleaning has taken place (you also mention cleaning) which in my view negates the condition as 'proof'. Others appear too dull to be proofs. Sorry to be negative about that but, of course the only way to give a definite opinion would be to physically examine the coins which is impractical. Hope this helps, Frank

Thanks Frank. Totally forgot about the fact there was no Jubilee head copper.

My photos are poor. The florin I am not sure about but the others, while the photos don't show it, have mirror like fields and razor sharp details. My lighting seems to have made the mirror like look disappear and the hairline scratches pop out. There is frosting on the devices on some but not all of the coins. The hairline scratches are also much less troubling in hand.

Not sure whether to certify them or not. I think it is worth it for the crown and the double florin. Probably not for the rest.

Just to clarify that two proof sets exist for 1887 for the Jubilee. Using Spink they are referenced as PS5 and PS6. PS6 contains seven silver coins (double florin to threepence) and PS5 contains the four golds in addition.

No bronze coins were issued.
