I did a little "treasure hunting" today. Just in case anyone wants to do this I am posting a photo of what you usually find. Today I did manage to find a quarter. 1973.

If you find one nice item in 100 digs, depending on the detector and your experience, consider yourself lucky.

That's a good start. Personally, I'm more of a cherry picker and rarely dig trash. My machine still tricks me on signals such as deep iron nails at about 8-10" deep, they hit like silver. I sometimes go for extended lengths of time between a good signal to dig.

I have only gone out a few times. I have a very cheap detector. to get familiar with the sounds I placed a few coins in the ground. A penny a clad coin and a silver coin. And then listened to the hits. Now I have a pretty good idea what a "real" hit sounds like. Most of the time I know I'm digging for a bottle cap, but hey, it's something to do.

Good to know, thanks!

I went out again yesterday. I found a couple dimes, nickles and pennies. This time I excluded iron from my settings. I still get hits from aluminium which sounds just like silver on my detector.

I have a Discovery 1100 I want to upgrade soon. I would like to get one of those hand held probe. I end up searching a 3x3 inch area. Its hard to zoom into a target with my detector/
