This is a thread for posting and discussion of scarce date Half Dimes. If necessary, this can be moved to the main coin forum. Dates include: 1838-O No Stars 1840-O No Drapery 1840 Drapery 1840-O Drapery 1841-O 1842-O 1844-O1846 (thq has one of these I think) 1849-O1850-O 1851-O 1852-O 1853 NA1853-O NA18631863-S18641864-S18651865-S18661866-S18671867-S1868 1868-S 1869 1869-S 1871-S All of these dates have low survival rates Underlined is semi-key Bold and underlined is a key So let's see em! I wish I could post mine, but I'm away from home and will be until April 6 or so. |

Here's mine 1850-o Half DimeHas a purple/ goldish tone that I didn't capture well. A nice little pre-war southern issue. Mintage-690,000 Graded by NGC   |

Nice little set, the easiest set of the Seated coins to put together, and still not that easy. I just need the 46, 65,66,and 67 to finish my set. |

Here are the ones I have photos of 1864-S   1846   I have several more on your list - 1838-O, 1849-O, 1863, 1863-S, 1865-S, 1866-S and 1868. All except the 1846 and 1863-S came from one shop. Who knows where he got them, and I could kick myself for not picking up the 1844-O too. I'll try to at least take photos of the 1849-O and 1868 - the others aren't as attractive. I have been collecting the early ones from 1792 to 1805 since the mid 1970s. I have a " Red Book" set minus the 1802, which has almost always been priced beyound my ability or desire to pay. Problem 1802 Half Dimes have sold at auction for close to $100 grand.  I have seen some pieces that had issues end up in straight graded holders. All of those pieces are tough, even the "common dates," 1795 and 1800. Sorry but I never got into the later dates. I dabled with the Capped Bust pieces for a time, but lost interest. I have tired kicked the 1846. It seems like that one is just about impossible ot find. |

I found that chewed up 1846 in a pawn/coin shop in Panama City FL ten years ago, for $125 if I remember right. I went in there to get a couple sterling iced tea spoons and the guy had some coins. He knew what he had. But how do you price something that looks like that? And when would I ever find another one in a shop? Rare Seated coins are where you find them. The scratchy 1856-S quarter for $15 from a shop owner who didn't see the weak S, in San Francisco. The 1889 half among a bunch of common dates in Holland MI. Always memorable.
