I had a proof medallion .925 that had a little dust or something on it so I put some fresh acetone in a glass dish and bathed the medallion in it for about 15 seconds, now the mirrored fields have clouded up with a milky haze.
What happened and what can I do about it?
I thought acetone was 100 per cent safe for coins and medallions?

1st off I have seen that happen before, but the clouding went away after a little bit. I hope that happens to yours as well.
2nd next time I would suggest using compressed air to remove dust.

Try another soak then rinse with distilled water - hope that works for your coin.

What the acetone dissolved from the coin was likely redistributed over the entire surface. Light agitation of the liquid while soaking works for me (followed by a clean rinse).

Just a sanity check.
Did you use pure acetone, not nail polish or something like that?

I've had this happen a couple of times. Moving to xylene took care of the haze.

Thanks all. Yes, soaked it and then rinsed with fresh acetone. didn't rinse with distilled water though. Still hasn't gone. Maybe I'll try xylene.
Just had a thought as I typed this - is it possible that the coin had an anti tarnish coating on it and the acetone only partially dissolved it? May be I'll try a longer soak.
And thanks Coinfrog - I was of course using the middle english spelling. Such a traumatic event required Chaucerian nomenclature.

Update - tried a longer second soak in acetone then distilled water rinse - no change
tried a quick rinse in xylene, slight improvement.
longer soak in xylene slightly more improvement. Still hazy though.
will more xylene soaks do much more or should I just stick a ribbon on it and give at out the local PS sports day?
