How black does a Black Beauty have to be? Can it still have luster to it or must it be dull?

I have tried various light sources and backgrounds to try and capture this coin's appearance. The fifth photo does it the most justice.

Is it? Or isn't it?

Here's a 1977-P nickel that I suspected of having the black beauty syndrome, but most likely exposure to the elements. There's hints of shiny nickel around the edge and high points of the hair.

Hey guys, what do you think about this one?

As others have found, it's hard to capture the gunmetal color just right.

This one stood out as a potential Black Beauty...except for the fact that it's a '45.

Because of it's metal content which is different from regular Jefferson nickels the War Nickels when circulated have that dark grey look to them . Your Nickel is not a Black Beauty .

Agree, the warnicks have to be evaluated separately - they tarnish like silver coins.

yep, looks BB

Were these nickels dark when they were fresh from the mint, or does the darkening develop over time?
