It is called a BIE error,it is a die chip. It is best to remove the coin from whatever holder it is in before taking pics when possible.

Looks like an earlier-stage BIE error. Look how small this "I" is.

Yea, in the 50's seemed the mint was trying to get the most use out of the dies possible. Why so many BIE, IIB"s,cuds and cracks, plus such mextreme die wear/deterioration examples us error nuts search after..
