The obverse had the best art and arguably the worst placement. That lot of empty space isn't going to help.
(Yes, it would be a perfect place to put E Pluribus Unum and the date in, and in fact that would make the design better. No, I don't expect them to do that, and in fact I vaguely recall that rhe legislation explicitly called to put them on the edge.) [EDIT: yes, it does, sadly.]
As for the reverse... meh, could've been worse. They could've chosen 10, or 7. And I guess all those gears are going to look much nicer on the actual minted coin...
I don't get the eagle, though. What's going on with it?

I agree with too much open area on the obverse. Should enlarge the Statue of Liberty image to fill up some of that space. The reverse wasn't my first choice but I'm ok with it. The design is cool and it fills up the coin nicely.

All I can say is that it could have been worse. I will reserve final judgement after I see how they look when struck.

Obv 8 is nice, but it looks more like something you would see on a medal rather than a coin.

Anyone have any updates on when the initial coin will get released?

I don't think that the Treasury Secretary has officially approved any of the designs yet that have supposedly been presented to him to review, and he must do that before a release date can be set. The link below shows the year that each state coin will be released, in the order that each state joined the union. https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct...fe1P2g_RB8Yg

I guess the whole process of striking and packaging coins once a design is picked must be fairly streamlined. With only a little over 2 months left this year I would have figured everything be set for the sale of the introductory coin.

I hope that someone will let the Treasury Secretary know that there is a need for speed here. The first coin of the regular series (for Delaware) probably won't be released much before mid to late February 2019, so the introductory coin could probably be released in very late 2018 or even very early 2019 without causing a problem. I don't think that the law as written would prohibit that.

Perhaps the US Mint will find an "Innovative" way to get the introductory coin out in 2018.

Considering aren't going to be making them for circulation, and that they will only need between 3 and 6 million of them for collector sales (probably less since they won't be needed for mint sets) and that one press can strike roughly one million coins a day (750 coins a minute, 45,000 coins an hour X 24 hr is 1,080,000 coins) They probably have til about Dec 27th to get production started. If they strike at both P and D mints and just use one press at each location they can have 4 million coins in 2 days. If they use multiple presses they can crank out all they need in an afternoon.

Quote: 750 coins a minute darn!........does it strike multiple coins at once or one at a time? I always assumed it was one at a time. I guess at that pace theres more than enough time to strike, package and sell the introductory coin before the end of the year.

The horizontal Schuler presses strike one at a time, 750 coins per minute, 13 coins per second. You understand why they have to have VERY low relief. There just isn't TIME for the metal to move very far.
