Yes, the City of Ottawa must have given special permission to violate the 11PM noise Bylaw this year. Likely will allow some downtown bars to stay open until 4AM too.

Who says we are the city that fun forgot?

I hope issuing multiple varieties of the same design isn't going to become a future RCM trend

Not exactly a trend but RCM has minted three versions (plain, coloured, selective gold) of the same design on the SD before. Twice that I can recall, 2005 & 2007 (only because I have them) are there any others?

In 2015 upon the 50th anniversary of the Canadian flag, RCM released a silver single SD and in the silver proof set, the red and white enamel version of the same. As someone here at the time pointed out, in the SD proof set is the same design except instead of the lone soldier, beneath the flag is a family.

That's the first time I recall RCM changing a design slightly, aside than adding colour or selective plating to what was produced from the same die.

Every year since 2005, the RCM has released at least two versions of the same SD design; for this discussion I am considering standard, unadorned proof and BU versions to be the same. Most years it is a standard proof SD along with a gold-plated SD. In 2005 and 2007, an enameled version was added. In 2015 (the 50th anniversary of Canada's flag), the selectively gold-plated version was replaced by a colourized version.

In 2016, the RCM released a colourized version of the Transatlantic Cable SD in addition to the standard and selectively gold-plated versions, but it is a different design.

So, 2017 is the third year that the same SD design was released in three versions. Though the approach has been used infrequently, I hope it does not become a new approach for the RCM.

Actually, I am quite disappointed with the RCM 150 coin releases to date. There are some nice coins but no one coin to date says to me that I have got to get it. No coin to date stands way out on the subject of the 150 year celebration. So far, the releases seem anti-climatic. Perhaps I was expecting too much: dazzling new technology, low mintage, great design, affordable, that is, not in the thousands of dollars range. Fingers crossed that such a coin has yet to be released.

Same thing.
But from all releases liked the most:

**$10 Maple leaf - this one only I got
**SD with lady with "4 arms"
**couple of 50c rolls
**SD with enamel over "150"
**Loonie Anniversary set - not 150-Anni related, but very nice, imo

There was speculation that the 5 oz. Peace Tower Clock coin was a commissioned coin. I found this thread from the designer of the coin (he also designed the Geometry In Art coin series, and the Whispering Maple Leaves coin, and various other coins) which seems to indicate that the Peace Tower Clock coin was not commissioned but was selected by competition/submission.

I like the Peace Tower Clock coin, but the possibility that it was commissioned made it a little off-putting. If indeed true, the coin looks more attractive now.

Any thoughts?

Edit: My apologies but I can't post external links. But for those interested, it is from this forum:

My understanding is when you commission a coin, you pay for the dies and some set up fees in return you are allowed up to half the mintage

I didn't buy the Peace Tower Clock coin during the advance ordering period, because I always avoid large silver coins. However, I changed my mind on Tuesday and ordered one from a dealer.

I liked the design. If you think about it, a clock face really fits a coin naturally. Both are round shaped. And both are vintage objects. I rarely see coins with this level of creativity and class.

I also liked the historical component: the two clock gears are made from oxidized copper that originally clad the roofs of the Parliament Buildings.

Finally, the mintage is low: 1,200.

Bromberg will start his Coin Show weekend tonight at 10pm on the TSC. I cannot wait to see what he will be showcasing as he promised to bring someone from the RCM for tonight's show. He will be showcasing coins all weekend long and you need to check TSC for the complete time schedule.

Should be very interesting indeed!!
